Am I just old-fashioned or why does it seem fewer and fewer people send thank-yous? I feel if you receive a gift, acknowledge that you appreciated someone thinking about you. Am I wrong?

You are not wrong. I am newly flattered every time I receive a thank you note, which only come from my sister-in-law. It is a dying tradition and, sad to say, I am one of those who do not send thank you notes, but I do acknowledge the gift by way of a phone call, or the modern version of a thank you note; an email. It isn't so much a matter of not having the time to write the note, but it involves making trips to buy the card, the stamps, etc. In an era of online bill pay and emails, no one needs to go out and do those things any longer.

I personally believe that everytime anyone gives you a gift a nice thank you note is what you should give in return. It's kinda like the Latino tradition where if someone brings you something in a bowl, plate, etc. You never return it empty. You make something to fill it up or put something in it. I have received very few thank you cards in the last few years and to be honest with you it makes me not want to give that person such a nice gift as I don't even know if they appreciated it. I still send thank you notes though everytime I receive a gift a I hope you do to. Maybe people will learn from our example and start to give them out. Your lucky nowadays to even get a thank you from some people but hey, we will just have to set the example for them. Glad to see I'm not alone out here with thank you notes ready for after X-Mas. '-)

Not only is it good manners to send out a thank you note, but it also gives you the opportunity to accomplish something else. A small gesture of acknowledgment can bring a lot of happiness to someone.

You are correct, but since we are a Society of Convenience and have limited time, we tend to overlook the niceties we used to use automatically. Email has replaced snail mail. The phone is replaced with text messages. Life is becoming an abbreviation.

I think schools need to reinforce the importance of etiquette as it isn't being done at home.

I love to send thank you notes no matter what!
Just the thought of someone picking out the card, taking their time to write it out, and going to the post office for a stamp!

Geez that means somebody cares.

Thanks Thanks!

P.S. I was not brought up to send THank You notes. But I send them from the heart, because someone gave me a gift from the heart.

No, you are not wrong. However I am the only one I know who still writes them. I keep a few blank ones in my desk drawer at all times, that way I am never caught without one...or don't have to run out to the store to get one. I too was never "taught" to do this....I just started it (years ago) as the right thing to do.

I wasn't brought up that way at all. I wish i was though because i think you're absolutely right. I'm definitely going to make it a habit though.

I AM SO PLEASED THAT OTHER PEOPLE FEEL THIS WAY ABOUT THE LACK OF A PERSONAL TOUCH THROUGH A THANK YOU NOTE. I THINK THEY ARE A LOVELY TRADITION AND I ALWAYS WRITE THEM. GOOD FOR YOU AND YOUR MANNERS.
