Guiness isn't an ale, it's a stout. And Boddington's is a bitter.

Mild Ale (what do you mean you've never heard of it!).
All beers brewed by Harvey's of Lewes and Timothy Taylor of Keighley are outstanding. They are the best mainstream brewers in Britain in my opinion - but there are plenty of micro breweries out there that are equally good. You'll just have to try them all!
Some advice on terminology: Any 'top-fermented' beer is an 'ale' -thus Boddingtons is certainly an ale, as it is a pale ale (or bitter) . It could be argued that Guinness, being top fermented, counts as well - even though it is a 'stout'. Bitter is a variety of ale, as is Mild, Old, Barley Wine, Brown Ale etc.

Shepherd Neame is an excellent brewery and its products are consumed by excellent people but....about 10 years ago I found a beer brewed by...I think it was the Faversham brewery?, or something like that. It was called simply...'Summer Ale' and it was delicious. Gorgeous bitter with a hint of grapefruit.

The best evenings beer drinking I have ever enjoyed...and I have enjoyed quite a few my friends.

Hope you've had better...bitter...LOL

I make my own. It's a porter that I add molasses and licorice to when I add the malt. I have 5 gallons of it fermenting now!! If I am stuck without any of my own I like Samuel Smiths Taddy Porter.

I used to like Old Speckled Hen, but since greene king took 'em over, it's been a bit variable.

I'm with you now though, although I'd go for a Spitfire personally.

Cheers.

Princetown Breweries ( up on Dartmoor) .... Jail Ale. It is just lovely (sadly not very widely available.... so when I go up to Brum to visit the family I have to drink the local whatever!)
