The golf VR6 mk3, what a machine, or maybe the supercharged Corrado.
As for current models, I wouldn't have a clue.

I am a very happy VW driver. Howere, since it is not specified in the question, I assume all volkswagens, including supercars, are included in this question. The culmination of most VW performance technologies makes the the Volkswagen W12 Coupe the best VW model. It holds the world 24 hour speed record at ~200mph for 24 hours. It is a beautiful machine that debuted in 2001. The engine is the prototype for the engine currently in the Phaeton. I have included links below.
In near production models: Volkswagen Concept R (two seater sport car).
In current production: VW Phaeton.

It has to be the cars that made the biggest difference. And depends if we're talking new or older models
The beetle is the best selling car of all time, VW camper has to be the ultimate cool.
However I recon the VW Golf Mk 1 GTI - The Golf was the car that rescued the company during the '70's and the GTI was the 1st main stream hot hatch. Today it is a cult and prices are increasing - the key is to find one that hasn't been modified!

The VW Corrado is the best VW ever! The best handling car they made. The Supercharged model is prob the best. The VR6 is quite heavy on the old petrol whereas the supercharged model is pretty good on mpg. If you want more power from the charged model just change the pulley for the charger and chip it, and you will stay with the VR6.

I used to sell VW's and the best by far is the Pheaton but the 2007 Passat is by far one of the best in the VW lineup. I had one as a company car and I raved about it everyday. I was very impressed. The 2.0T is the base engine and it is turbocharged. Even cooler, their is no turbolag what so ever because of the FSI technologie. Not to mention an estimated 32mpg highway and 23mpg city. As well as one of the best saftey ratings in its class. Just for reference, I come from a Ford family, and the key is that I USED to sell cars. this is not a biasd review just an honest one. German engineering is much more refined and all around more innovative. You wont be dissapointed. The average price for this car is approximatly $27,000.00 and come fully loaded with the 2.0T at approx. $30,000.00.

No one has mentioned the Bus, Van, Transporter. We personally have a Rivera (camper conversion 73) and it is awesome.
I prefere the old VW to the new. Nothing beats the BBRRRAAA of the cc engine.

It depends on what you judge as best in a car.
The Volkswagen EOS is probably the best due to it being a
four seater hard top cabriolet. It will also a good residual value,
due to it's market niche.
