Hi everybody,

We have a 5-month old kitten that just went in for a neuter surgery today. He got to the vet's in the early morning and got back in the afternoon. Ever since, he has been confined to the indoors.

He actually lives in an outdoor porch that has a pet door on it so he can go in and out whenever he likes. However, the vet has told us to lock the pet door so he can only stay inside for the next few days. This is so that he doesn't become too active and accidentally screw up the stitching.

BUT, since coming back from the surgery, our kitten has taken a liking to putting his paws in the water bowl and splashing around the water all over the floor! He has done it twice, and it is becoming very frustrating because we have insulation underneath that might become damaged.

Do any of you have any suggestions to help with our kitten problem? Please help before my mom decides to kick the poor kitten out of the house!!!

THanks all..

Just put a towel under the bowel and let him have his fun. I love to watch my cat play with the water. Do not try to stop him. There are a lot worse problems that might need correction but splashing water is not one of them. Just relax and enjoy kitty at play. Do not follow what one of the the people above said. you should never spank a cat. Ever. They just don't get it. If you need to correct a cat use a spray bottle or water gun and give them a squirt every time they do whatever it is that you want stopped. Trust me, it works.

Some cats just do that. It's a little odd that he's doing it after the neutering but he's likely trying to tell or he's not too pleased with being told where he can and can not go.

First of all, put a mat of some kind under the bowl. Just to try to keep the area dry.

Secondly, don't fill the bowl up all the way. He'll have a harder time trying to splash a bowl that isn't full.

He'll still have enough to drink, just make sure to check the water level so you can refill it when he gets low.

Put plastic down all the way around the bowl and get a deeper bowl so he will have a heck of a time not being able to splash the water around. I bet he is cute to watch! I had a cat that sat at the edge of the bath tub and used to take his paw and splash water. I just laughed because alot of cats hate water! Good Luck to you and your kitty!

Kitty is playful and BORED! Play with her gently with feather toy or yarn. Water is a new playtoy/fascination which will pass. A larger bowl may help. Put bowl on a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet which should lay over a garbage bag or a waterproof pad under it (even a large chux pad will keep the water off the floor needing protection.

A treat ball may also help.

he's just bored and is having fun in one of the few ways he knows how. Just put down a bigger bowl or get one of the lids to a big plastic tub and put it under the bowl with a towel to soak up the water and just enjoy watching him goof around. He's just a kitten afterall. He doesn't know he could mess something up.

If you have one of those large plastic box lids, I'd take it off and put it upside down under the water dish. That way he can splash all he wants...and the water will just go into the lid and you can soak it up later with a rag.

Perhaps you could try putting a doormat under the water bowl. And if he is tipping the bowl over- which mine did for a while- get a heavy-duty bowl, such as is used for large dogs, and use that for water.

Good luck!

I seriously doubt that little bit of water is going to damage anything. Just clean up as it happens or put a big towel under his dish until he goes back out. My cat is 9 years and she still plays in water. Feel special, it is rare when a feline likes to play in water.

cats love running water. the cat in my avatar drinks from the bathroom sink. the water runs nearly all the time (just a small trickle) putting something under the water bowl is a good idea.

I would put some sort of protection to absorb water under the bowl. I don't think he will keep doing this, but just in case, you will be prepared.
