Cobb County, which tried to put a sticker on biology books discouraging students from accepting science, has settled:

No stickers on textbooks. What will be the fallout of this? Will Creationists just go home, or will there more fighting?

Science has won over and over, and the religious continue to fight.

This will go on until we stop them from indoctrinating their youth.

I only wish that the whole thing would be considered settled, but I doubt that it will be.

I have a very serious problem with the whole FNC-promoted idea that presenting "all sides" of something leads to anyone knowing what the facts are or what the truth is.

what, are we to take the "average" of opposing viewpoints and declare that the truth, split the difference and decide that there is some sort of factual information to be gathered from that?

Not all "sides" of a debate, not all opinions, have equal merit. Presenting them as having equal merit is an insult to my intelligence.

Evolutionary science is a field in which there are new discoveries. That means it's modified to fit the new stuff. Thus one could say that it doesn't have the answers. YET.

But creationism or so-called "intelligent design" has less going for it than evolutionary science does - it is religious doctrine disguised as "science", and the idea that these two should be presented on an equal footing is outrageous.

As Isaac Asimov said:

"[W]hen people thought the Earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the Earth was spherical they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the Earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the Earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together."

As for me, I view the creation stories of my own religion as poetic allegory.

Dude: I am a Christian, who agrees with YOU. Creationists have nothing to fear about science. As a matter of FACT, true science enhances TRUE religion [ not dysfunctional religion]. On a more personal note, without science, how could any modern day Christian prove God's existence to even, them self prior to entering a relationship with Jesus Christ ? My brother-in-law is a Doctor of Nuclear Physics - a genius . He has taught nuclear physics and is a Christian himself, who currently works producing atomic energy. He has proven the existence of a Creator with the use of physics [ science] . As for myself, I have proven the existence of a Creator too with science. How can anyone calling them self a "Christian" just follow along and believe things, "because somebody said ..." !!! The proof is in the proverbial "pudding" ! My, own, belief concerning the fight presented both, to and from either side is this. Everyone has the RIGHT to be WRONG until he / she decides to change and find out things for them self ! I hope the "Creationists" do go home, cease their fighting and trust their Creator to change others !!! GREAT Question !!!

Notice that the creationists backed down on this one. I think that the obvious reason is the fallout of Kitzmiller vs. Dover from earlier this year. As the courts made clear in that case that they will not accept creationist propaganda, the creationists don't have a leg to stand on.

I think the Cobb County case turned out this way because the creationists hadn't prepared any new set of lies to tell in court - they were still hoping to get by on the last set, and Kitzmiller kicked the legs out from under them.

I predict that they'll develop some new propaganda, and shamelessly use it to perjure themselves in court yet again in pursuit of the creationist agenda. We need to start jailing these people for their consistent perjury.

religion and evolution are two disctinct areas of study.
I live in Canada, however, and what a gaggle of backward Americans do is very much explained in their constitution, and really I couldn't care less. Freedom to express themselves. I don't consider all Americans to be that close-minded, nor do I think all Canadians are open-minded. I just think there should be a standard of education, and booting religion out of schools is causing this knee-jerk reaction. I'm just sitting back and watching what will happen. Very much like your avatar, except I don't have a beard.

Here's how we handle it with our kids.
We explain that public school is only allowed to teach evolution.
And our Church (and/or private schools,or at home) can teach about creation(or both). In school they study, observe, learn, and past the test to get the grade. In Church they learn another view.

So if anything, this makes us emphasis the Christian point of view at home. Our kids too are taught that others may have different beliefs.

The decision is a great victory. But only one the many battles to be won.

Willfully ignorant people never give up thearguement that black is white, no matter how much evidence you provide to refute their arguement. they will not go away until the government starts jailing them for deseminating hatred

The question is will they persist because they are stupid, or are they stupid because they will persist? It doesn't really matter; the fund raising letters to continue the fight will be sent.
