I need to know what I can do to kill and prevent the larvae in my grass. We have been very bad on picking her poop up everyday. Maybe we will do it 1x a wk. We are concerned becasue I just found out she has hookworm and just started the meds but was told to pick up each stool. (Which is very hard to do when it's dark outside!) Anyways, I HEARD THAT THEY CAN STAY IN THE GRASS AND DIRT! She can still get infected. She is on and has been on heartguard forever. Need help? Live in Chicago suburbs. Not a good time to try and pickup poop in a very large backyard either. She won't go for walks and poop either.

I mean I found out that they can last in the grass & dirt for several months even years.
Is there a home ingredient I can try to spray the grass or will the cold air kill them but will they come out again in spring? Help

It took some real deep searching, but I did find that there are different disinfectants that kill many things in dog waste, and are still safe for the enviorment. I will include the link. It, if it does what it says it does, is the best product I have found so far. It is called Virkon S and is made by Dupont Animal Health. I hope this helps. It says it even treats the strains of Parvo viruses, not to mention is EPA approved. I hope this helps.

oh boy, that is a tough one to get rid of forever!. You first will have to clean up her stool daily. Do you use heartgard plus? If you are she shouldn't have hookworms.. If your just giving her regular heartgart switch to the plus because it will keep the hook and other worms away.
You might also think of changing to revolution. It's topical and also gets rid of worms, keeps them away including heartworms.
I am going through the same thing so I understand, and I have more than one dog. They can pick it up through their paws and she probably got it from a park or something.
One thing I now do is I give my dogs Food grade diatomaceous earth in thei food every day, and you can also put this on the ground.. Here are some links for that, how to use it and its cheap, a little goes a long way too:

going to be hard to kill anykind of worms in the grass without killing the grass you can try lime from your local hardwear store but the best thing to do is just worm your dog every 5 months with panacur wormer or strongid wormer from the vet strongid wormer is a 1 day dose panacur is a 3 to 5 day dose depending on worm type you can even try spraying clorox on the spots wher the dogs do their business as soon as they do their business but getting the worms out of the ground is impossible but they can be controled with clorox being sprayed heavily on the stool also the nemex and nemex 2 wormers have never worked for me i raise dogs for a living i only use panacur from the vet its 3 days for hook and lg round worms and 5 days in a row for tape worms every puppy i've sold have been vet cheched the day of purchase and were worm free and in excellant health

last i checked chicago had daylight hours this time of year. pick it up in the daylight. ask your vet what you can put on your yard, did they have any ideas? hookworms are nasty resiliant little creatures that even humans can contract.
