What should you look for-- portfolio, accreditation of some sort, years of experience, or something else? What are the risks involved in tattooing?

Where can I find reviews of good tattoo parlors?

The EXIT door. Some day you will probably regret it, and they don't come off easily.

Accredation will not get you much. A portfolio will only show you the work as it was immediatly after getting it -- not a true representation of what it will look like when it's healed.

If you see a person with a tattoo, ask who did it (not where they had it done). The artist makes all the difference. A person may recommend a good place, but there are some bad tattoo's and artists at "good" places. Ask people, no matter the tattoo -- good or bad. Note the location of the bad ones. You'll want to know where not to go. Same with he good.

Most places are clean. Make sure you're getting a new needle. It should be sealed in a plastic wrap. Ask if you can see the autoclave. They should have no problem letting you see it. My guy volunteered to show me when I first went to him. Also ask if you can watch while somebody gets a tattoo if the customer doesn't mind (usually won't unless it's on their ugly butt).

First off don't go to a place if it don't look clean use common sense then Go thru their portfolio and make sure their work looks good. Ask for references that have been tattooed there before. Go in one day and just observe what all is going on check to see if they are opening new needles out of the packing EVERYTIME make sure they lay surran wrap on everything (what ever spot is being tattooed IE: like it the wrist is being tattooed make sure the arm rest is wrapped in surran wrap) also see if they spray everything down because they should. You can also check to see if they have ever had a violation of any kind by going to the health department of thru BBB.Then talk to the artist and ask how long they have be tattooing. If you are smart about it and go to a good clean place there is no risk. Just be smart about it.

Referrals are the A#1 best way to find a good tattoo shop. Ask people whose tattoos you admire where they go and who their artist is. Most towns have their "known" popular artists and you should be able to find out pretty easily by asking around.

Cleanliness is of the utmost importance. The artist needs to use new, sterilized needles that you watch him take out of the sealed package. The artist should also wear gloves.

The risks are relatively low, the main one being infection. If you go to a reputable artist and follow the post-care instructions, you shouldn't have any problems.

The main thing to remember about tattoos is that they are PERMANENT. BE SURE that whatever you get is uniquely you. It will represent you for the rest of your life.

Don't get names, fad symbols, or some meaningless design just to get ink on your skin Think long and hard about what you really want and if possible, make it something one of a kind.

Take care and best of luck!

First and foremost look for cleanliness. Sounds boring but extremely important you don't want a dirty needle being stuck into you with all the sickness and deseases about. Than look at artwork to see if the tatoo artist is good at drawing because you want your tatoo which will be on you for all eternity to look great not just good or so so. Ask about years experience and try to go to someone whose artwork you have seen on someone elses body. Lastly whatever you want, be sure you want to look at it 356 days a year for the rest of your life. Good luck

Most tattoo parlours have portfolios of each artist on display in their shop.

Most important thing is to make sure they use new needles. Make sure they have a functioning autoclave steriliser and a high level of hygiene in the shop.

One suggestion - A lot of people who've been there and returned without HIV, which CAN be transmitted through a tattooing needle. Look for results in people you know, ask someone who has a well-done tattoo where the got it from.

is it clean? Have u seen their work before? Do they use new equipment and do they autoclave everything? Is their autoclave current and the inspection date isn't expired? portfolio - usually they have a binder and also their websites have them...

Re: reviews, you might want to just go there yourself and also, it helps alot if you know someone that has been inked by them before.

Number one thing should be cleanliness. If it's not clean in there, then that should be a huge no. You never know when the last time was that they cleaned the supplies that they will be using on you.
