My cat has liver failure. Her sister just started actually leaking urine ( alot ) & shaking and not eating. They are both about 3 years old. My cat with liver failure was fat , quit eating ( supposedly ) & fat clogged her liver. NOW her sister ( cat ) is sick suddenly as well. What is going on with my animals ?! I just spent 350 on the liver failure cat & the vet wants to put a feeding tube surgically into her neck tomorrow! I cant afford that and now if I take her sister in the vet is gonna think im a whacko. I have 2 very sick cats all at once. I am so confused & theres nothing on the net about cats leaking pee and shaking other than kidney failure. I find it hard to believe in the same week that one cats liver failed and the other cats kidneys shut down. ACK !! HELP!!?? any advice other than putting them to sleep?! .........

Actually renal failure is quite common in cats and usually comes over time, mostly in older cats. Not seen it very often in younger cats, unless they have ingested something that would cause it. We had a beautiful dilute calico that was symtomic over the last year of her almost nineteen year life span. In the last several months, she would "leak" her urine sometime in her sleep and at other times while she was just resting. When they get closer to the absolute renal failure, they will lose their appetite (perhaps stop eating altogether) and start a dehydration process which it sounds like your cat is entering. Renal failure symptoms at least in our cat was preceeded by excessive thirst...almost like a diabetes symptom in humans that was present for nearly 18 months, but the vets couldn't pinpoint any issues through blood work.

If your cats are allowed outdoors they can be exposed to antifreeze this time of year, find quite tasty, and if they find antifreeze they'll drink it. Antifreeze is extremely toxic causing kidney failure that is often fatal in just a few days.

Very small amounts of antifreeze can be fatal. If a cat walks through a puddle of antifreeze and then licks its paws, it can ingest enough antifreeze to cause death. About five tablespoons can kill a medium sized dog. If you see your pet drinking antifreeze, or are at all suspicious that your pet may have had access to antifreeze, contact a veterinarian immediately.

Very small amounts of antifreeze can be fatal Signs of antifreeze poisoning depend upon the time after ingestion. In the first few hours after ingestion the pet may be depressed and staggering and may have seizures. They may drink lots of water, urinate large amounts and vomit. The pet may appear to feel better but in a day or two get much worse as the kidneys fail. Signs of kidney failure include depression and vomiting. The amount of urine they pass will often decrease to a very small amount.

The diagnosis of antifreeze poisoning is made by blood and urine tests although some of these tests become negative by the time kidney failure develops. Antifreeze poisoning should be considered in any free-roaming dog or cat with consistent signs.

At this point, I'd say trust you vet for advice and guidance, but renal failure is almost always fatal.

Good luck!

It sounds like they might have gotten into something that they shouldn't have. You don't have any chemicals or rat poison around the house do you? It could also be a genetic illness. But either way If you want them both to survive and remain healthy you should take them to the vet. When you get a pet you take on the responsibility of caring for them. That doesn't just mean loving them it means accepting the financial responsibilities too. Pets aren't cheap.

It sounds like FIP (thats what my kitten had) did the vet test for this?? It would show up on the blood work. My kitten was 5 months old, he started to sleep all day, and not eat, then he could not walk, and he had seizures, and then started going to the bathroom all over himself. There is no cure for FIP as sad as it it. You might want to think about having them put to sleep, there is nothing else to really do. I know its hard but you have to think of the health of your cats. I might be wrong though, but if the vet cant do anything to make them better, then why put them through the pain? I

it's possible that it's genetic but you really need to take the other one to the vet as well. They won't think you're a whacko because there's a very sick cat on hand. They'd know more about it than anyone and they might be able to tell you if it's genetic.

they also might have gotten into some kind of poison

They probably have a common illness or poisoning. Tell the vet that the other is sick as well and that may change his diagnosis of the first. Or take both to a different vet for a second opinion.

Rush them to a vet and have a professional take a real diagnosis.

I hate to tell you this- but putting them to sleep is probably the kindest thing you can do for them.
