Torrents are files (video, music, apps, games, etc. ) that people are willing to share with others over the internet(p2p sharing ).If you get a torrent sharing program/software such as Bitcomet or Azureus you can then browse the many torrent sites and choose a file that others have put on the list to share. Then start downloading free of charge(others are willing to share). The protocol/done thing is to then to let others share/upload this file from you. This keeps the community healthy. Also you can upload your own original files for others to share, this will get you much kudos from other peers.

Torrents are files used with torrent clients (such as http://www.utorrent.com )

A torrent file is usually under 100kb, and tells the client what files to download and other information (such as an annouce URL)

BitTorrent is the name of a peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol which is what the clients use to download the files from the torrent.

Basically torrents are the name of a peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol, and of a free software implementation of that protocol. If you need a torrent client http://www.utorrent.com/download.php
