After the events of 11 September 2001, President Bush had to do something. The American public was clamoring for justice to be done. As those craven hijackers were all dead (and in hell), they could not be prosecuted and given their just desserts. If the President did not do anything, that would have been disasterous.

Thus it was noted that the Taliban had supported Al Qaeda in the past, and had given support to Osama bin Laden, who was identified as the mastermind behind the attacks. Reports showed that OBL was in the Afghanistan region at the time. Thus the United States, with the support of many nations, waged a campaign to drive out the Taliban and to capture OBL. Unfortunately, the latter was not successful, and the former nowadays does not seem to be so completely successful either, as the Taliban is regrouping, or so I have heard. They were scattered, but not completely eliminated.

Although capturing OBL won't do anything to lessen the risk of terrorism (it might even heighten it, by making him a martyr), it would reassure people quite a bit and lower the perceived hazard, which is very different from the actual risk.

because the Bush family had a plan to make billions when the 1st conflict happened, but he wasn't in office long enough, so when we were all distracted and scared of terrorists after the 911 attacks the President convinced us that invading Afghanistan was going to get rid of terrorism...cutting the head off the snake...then we got there, faced no resistance and never really caught the terrorist...Bin Laden will be breathing the same air as you this Christmas again...7 years later...so since they had a plan and a grudge why not set it into motion and make some cash...cause lord knows we didn't have the intelligence information to wage an invasion that quickly with a country that was still rebuilding after the last time we blew it up.

so the quick answer is...the US and it's leaders made a quick and wrong decision we all have to live with as another generation of people learn to hate us for killing there family's over oil money.

Barring the historical and current reasons stated in all the other responses, it is a NATO mission in which the US and Canada, amongst others, are major players. We are trying to keep the peace as well as perform limited counter insurgency operations in an attempt to prevent a unfavorable form of government from a US perspective.

It is also a way for NATO to again assert themselves and redefine their mission beyond the Cold War era...

Because we have no other place to spend our money. What kind of a stupid question is this? Ever hear of the atrocities that were committed by Al Queda and the Taliban? Who will repay these murderers for their crimes? There are more troops in Afghan than Canadians and Americans.

Oh please. Everyone on the face of this planet knows about 9/11. Maybe you weren't old enough at the time of the attack, but this was the worst attack on American soil to date.
