It's moderation that is the key unless it involves something that takes your will away such as addiction. If you knowingly get involved with something that is commonly known as an addictive substance then, you are liable for the result. This is where the sin is. Once one is addicted then from then on the will is not engaged like normal. In other words people who were addicted to nicotine before it was known to be that bad and addictive, are not as culpable as people who become addicted today. Overeating once in awhile happens so that is not really a sin but, when one does it all the time as a way to comfort themselves rather than turning to God for comfort -- that is sin. Tanning -- it depends, tanning for some people is good for their skin because it cuts down on zits and stuff but, for just pure physical pride --that's wrong and sinful.

Eating too much is Gluttony, one of the 7 deadly sins, so it would be more of a sin than tanning or smoking which do not occur on said 7 deadly sin list.

You will find the only physical sin is 'eating too much' among seven deadly sins, which are: Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Lust, Envy ,Pride and Gluttony.
It is very logical also. Eating too much will lead you to a miserable life with various diseases. Sins are not really the things that lead you to so-called 'hell', but preventors and guardians for your present life's perfection if you realise it.

Sin is sin. Tanning? Anything to excess can be sin - too much food can be a sin. Too much of anything is not good - you can have too much water and drown in your own tissues. But, sin is sin - God is infinitely holy, so any sin is magnified by infinity.

As I understand, no sin is greater than the other. With only one exception, and that's making fun of the holy ghost, which is the greatest sin one can do.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.
