"Reverse Sneeze"...

Occasional bouts of sneezing, snorting, honking and wheezing are not unusual in chihuahuas, and is sometimes called a "reverse sneeze". This is usually caused by a elongated soft palate that is thought to become temporarily misaligned. It is a common trait in toy breeds. Pulling hard on a leash, drinking too fast or getting overly excited can lead to an episode of reverse sneezing. Reverse sneezing SHOULD NOT be confused with a different condition called "collapsed trachea".
Although reverse sneezing may appear to be scary, it only lasts a short time and can be ended by massaging the dog's neck and throat and encouraging the dog to swallow or lick. Another way to slow the reverse sneeze is to clap your hands to distract the dog, or pinch closed the dog's nostrils with your fingers, forcing it to breathe through its mouths and to swallow.

Tracheal collapse is a condition in which the trachea partially collapses as a dog breathes, leading to tracheal irritation, coughing and sometimes secondary changes in the lungs or upper airways. Chihuahuas are among the most common dogs to suffer from this condition. There are medical treatments for collapsing trachea as well as surgical treatments. Have a vet examine your dog to determine which problem your chihuahua has. Dogs with a collapsed trachea should probably be examined at least twice a year to allow early detection of any secondary problems that do occur.

Smoking can irritate both of these conditions.

Almost all chihuahuas do this...it's called "reverse sneezing". Does it kind of sound like he's honking like a goose? It usually happens when they're excited or they've been running around. It's nothing to worry about but it is scary the first few times it happens. Rubbing under their neck very gently helps to calm them down and breathe easier. Chihuahuas are also prone to trachea collapse, so you'll want to use a harness rather than a collar. If it seems to be getting worse or sounds differently than I described, then you might want to get a vet to check him out.

The same thing happens to my Pug. I have asked my vet about it, and it's not that big a problem. When he gets overexcited, I try to remove him from the source of his excitement, and rub on his chest or back, which sometimes helps sooth the problem. It will also just go away by itself after a little bit.

The same thing happens with most Boston Bull Terriers. It's a problem with their breathing. I'll tell you that the way to get them to stop is to eather lightly blow into their nose or eather strong the back of their neck. Hope I was some help!
