You won't find living people or recently dead people on-line; at least not with their ancestors. Most of the genealogy sites intentionally hide details of people born after 1920. If you can find your great grandparents' names and your friends' great grandparents' names off-line, you have a chance of tracing them back on-line to see it there is a connection.

About half the people who post questions here want to enter their name in a magic web site and see a 12-generation family tree, as easily as they can download tunes or look up the population of Bulgaria. There isn't any such site.

The resolved Questions have 250,000 links to free genealogy sites, if you are still interested.

I would like to know the answer to that also.
I have been to several sites that claim to be free, all to be asked to become a member for an outrageous price.
Good luck.
