First of all, to angelkate, a fake tree will not necessarily discourage the cat from climbing it. I had a 6-month old kitten a few years ago, who actually pulled the whole fake tree down. He knows better now, thank God. Some cats will be interested, some won't, sometimes they grow out of it,sometimes they don't. Try the spray from the pet store, and good luck!

My family fixed the cat climbing the tree problem by getting a rotating tree stand. The cat is now scared to climb the tree when it is turning.

Well if your cats *despise* water, then squirt them with some water every time they go near it. But if you have a cat like mine that actually likes water (he plays in it even! silly Leo-cat...) we use one of those nerf dart guns with the foam darts. We shoot right next to him (we never hit him with it) and it scares him. He's learned that the Tree is off limits. HAHA.

There's a special spray that is supposed to keep cats off of furniture that human's aren't supposed to be able to smell. I don't know what it's called but you should be able to get it at almost any store such as Wal-Mart. It might be something worth trying.

There's this stuff that makes it and them smell really bad ( u can't smell it though) and makes the tree taste bitter. You can buy it from most pet stores.
