Moses was to get 1 man from each ancestral tribe and send one of each leader. These men were to go out from the desert of Paran into Caanan. They were to spy the the land to see if they could take it. 10 of the 12 spies came back and said that they couldn't because the enemies were like giants, while Joshua and Caleb, said that there would be no problem because God would give them the land. Because the people listened to the first 10 spies instead of Joshua and Caleb, the Israelites were forced to dwell in the desert for 40 years.
