I am going to have between 5 and 8 people for Christmas, and I am going to do a ham. I figured out at Thanksgiving that 24 pounds of turkey was a bit much for 5 people, so I need a little advice for Christmas.

I would get at least an 8 pound ham, this allows for shrinkage during baking and you have enough leftover for a couple of sandwhiches. The general rule is 4 oz per person however the average person eats 8 oz of meat during a dinner. Beware of the ham you buy if it says water added and weighs 10 pounds it will only weigh 8 pounds when it is fully cooked! Do not buy a ham with water added!

Baked Ham in Champgne 8 - 10 pound ham 1 lb. brown sugar 2 bottles extra dry champagne (doesn't have to be expensive, just drinkable) 3 teaspoons honey 1 1/2 teaspoons grated or ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard Score ham and place in an appropriately sized baking dish. Cover ham with 1 cup of brown sugar and press into the meat. Pour one bottle of champagne over this. Cover tightly and bake at 325 degrees for about 2 3 hours. Combine remaining ingredients and 1/2 bottle of champagne in a saucepan. Bring to boil. Simmer to thicken for a few minutes. Baste ham every 15 minutes until desired tenderness. Some like it firm, some like it fall off the bone tender. Your choice. Orange Glazed Ham Juice 4 large oranges, enough for at least 1 cup of juice 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger or dried giinger Place ingredients in a sauce pan and cook down until the texture of syrup. Pour over scored ham. Tightly cover and cook at 325 degrees until you reach your desired tenderness. You can use concentrated orange juice, but I have orange trees and there's nothing like the fresh stuff. Those are two ways I cook it that my family loves. I hope one of them suits your fancy.

Use 1/2 # as the average portion per person. That would be 4 # for 8 people. But to be safe, get 5 #. That should leave a little extra for sandwiches from leftovers.

Figure on about a pound per person for a bone-in ham. That should be more than enough. It always tastes great the next day in a sandwich, added to an omelet or split pea soup. Have fun!

I think it's two pounds of ham per each person, just as with turkey. I saw it on some news morning show.

Actually....that would probably depend on the size of the people....lol....anyway......A spiral cut, honey glazed ham that only needs heating is wonderful.....You can buy it in meat dept and they come in half of a ham....usually around 5-7 lbs....you might have some left for sandwiches....but not nearly as much leftovers as you had Thanksgiving.....happy cooking

5 pounds is sufficient. The rule is half pound per person and you'll have some left over.

[edit] Number definitions
Definitions of the various digits vary widely among practitioners. Common examples include:

0. Everything and nothing. The All
1. Individual. Aggressor. Yang.
2. Balance. Union. Receptive. Yin.
3. Communication/interaction. Neutrality.
4. Creation.
5. Action.
6. Reaction/flux. Responsibility.
7. Thought/consciousness.
8. Power/sacrifice.
9. Completion.
10. Rebirth.

[edit] Digit summing
Numerologists often reduce a number or word by a process known as digit summing, then reach conclusions based on the single digit that is produced.

Digit summing, as the name implies, involves taking the sum of all of the digits in a number, and repeating the process as necessary until a single-digit answer is produced. For a word, the values corresponding to each letter's place in the alphabet (e.g., A=1, B=2, through Z=26) are summed.

Examples:

3,489 -> 3 + 4 + 8 + 9 = 24 -> 2 + 4 = 6
Hello -> 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52 -> 5 + 2 = 7
Goodbye -> 7 + 15 + 15 + 4 + 2 + 25 + 5 = 73 -> 7 + 3 = 10 -> 1 + 0 = 1
A quicker way to arrive at a single-digit "summation" is simply to take the value modulo 9, substituting a possible result of 0 with 9 itself.

The resulting numbers are usually assigned definitions to provide the desired insight. Definitions for the meaning of each digit vary among cultures and systems. Frequently, 0 is said to correspond to the infinite or to nothingness; 1 to the individual; and 2 to union. Beyond that, definitions vary widely.

Different methods of calculation exist, including Chaldean, Pythagorean, Hebraic, Helyn Hitchcock's method, Phonetic, Japanese and Indian.

In some cases, in a type of numerological divination, the name and birth date of an individual will be used to analyze and define personality and propensities.

[edit] Chinese numerology
Main article: Numbers in Chinese culture
Some Chinese assign a different set of meanings to the numbers and certain number combinations are considered luckier then others. In general, even numbers are considered lucky, since it is believed that good luck comes in pairs.

[edit] Chinese number definitions
Cantonese frequently assign the following definitions, which may differ in other forms of Chinese:

- 一 sure
- 二 easy
- 三 live
- 四 - considered unlucky since the pronunciation of 4 ( sì ) sounds like the word for death ( sǐ ).
- 五 - the self, me, myself, nothing, never
- 六 - easy and smooth
- 七 - together
- 八 - sudden fortune, prosperity
- 九 - long in time
Some lucky number combinations include:

168 - road of prosperity or to be prosperous together - many premium-pay telephone numbers in China begin with this number. Many businesses also prefer to have this number as part of their names.
518 - I will prosper, other variations include: 5189 (I will prosper for a long time), 516289 (I will get on a long, smooth prosperous road) and 5918 (I will soon prosper)
888 - prosperity x3.
