I have 2 long hair and 2 short hair cats. 1 of each gets hairballs. I'm treating them for it but I just want to know what makes some cats get them and others not?

some groom more. Mine out grew it after having a terrible time. There is food specially formulated for cats that get furballs.

All cats can't breakdown the fur once it's in there stomachs- hence hairballs.

But, some cats will poop out the fur instead of coughing it up. So it could be that your other cats are just passing it when they go to the bathroom.

If they are outdoor cats, they could also be coughing up the hairballs outside and you wouldn't know about it.

some cats get hairballs because they shed more than other cats or they are brushed less... brushing prevents hairballs because it collects all the fur that is loose... try that
