My puppy keeps eating weeds and puts several stones in her mouth. Sometimes she goes for hours without spitting them out.
Is it unhealthy for her to eat weeds? I can't stop her because my parents keep leaving her out in the garden and there are so many weeds in the garden that she eats any little scraps she can find. I get really concerned when she starts to do choking movements and almost vomits after eating a lot of weeds, leaves, and sticks. Please help?
Thanks!

She is only 7 weeks old and has strict rules about when she is to be de-wormed. My garden is filled with pebbles, which is basically the surface of the ground. It is not paved or grassy, so Elkie (my puppy) keeps eating the pebbles that make up the ground. She is under strict instruction because we are raising her and giving her back soon to be trained as a guide dog for the vision impaired. I hope this information helps.

And I can't change her diet. She's on Advance wet and dry food for large breeds. I'm very sorry to say this, but she's a little bit young and dumb and doesn't learn commands easily.

usually dogs eat grass if their tummy hurts. It doesn't hurt unless they've been sprayed. You shouldn't let her pick up stones though she could swallow them and surgery to remove s expensive if it causes a blockage. teach her the command 'leave it" walk her on a leash and when she picks up things you don't want her to have make a sudden noise and say "leave it" eventually she'll get the picture. I had a dog that ATE everything--cat toys, rocks, you name it. I had to keep him on a leash and tell him "leave it" for everything until he outgrew it. I spent several worried days waiting for things to come out the other end!

I'm not sure if the question is how to stop your dad from hurting it, or will the dog be hurt from the weed, but I would hope that your dad would not hurt the dog!! In any circumstances! I don't believe weed is toxic to dogs. Vomiting shouldn't be induced because it is likely that the dog will be very sedated, almost intoxicated appearing. Try to get the dog to drink a lot of water. If it's a larger dog, you shouldn't have complications, possible slow heart rate. But if it is a small dog, make sure to keep a very close watch on it, and take it to an emergency vet if it begins to look serious. I wish you the best of luck!

Very glad to know my dogs are not the only ones eating dry weeds and rocks. We live on two and half acres, the dogs have their own door and come and go as they please. So some of the answers will not work for us. Dogs get walked every day at least 30min. One goes for training twice a week and one once a week, for training and socializing. One gets along well with people but not always with other dogs, other well with dogs but frighten if to much noise and to many people so classes around a lot of dogs and noise and people.

All dogs eat weeds and grass it makes them vomit because they have a upset stomach, it's natural let her eat the weeds and grass and let her vomit. Also get her a chew bone and some treats she's eating the rocks because something is missing in her diet, don't feed Ole Roy dog food it has NO nutrition in it.

Dogs will naturally crave greens if they are not getting enough chlorophylll in their diet. It is very dangerous for your puppy to be eating weeds since these can carry man made pesticides. Before dogs were domesticated they were free to eat grasses all the time. Now present day, owners find it annoying when their dog is eating grass and feel their dog has something wrong with it. Try feeding your puppy a couple green beans with every meal or as treats. The best thing you can do is go to a pet store and ask for sea kelp. Sea kelp is loaded with chlorophyl and you can just add the powder to their meals.
If your puppy continues to eat weeds after you provide the sea kelp and string beans for a couple days, I would definitely go to your vet. My neighbors dog ate weeds and grass clippings non-stop for a week before they finally took her to the vet. She ended up having a stick lodged in her throat and was eating grasses to try and pass the stick. She ended up having surgery...but it saved her life!
As for the rocks, my dog did the same thing as she was growing up. This is very dangerous because it is very easy for them to crack their teeth with rocks in their mouth. Go to the pet store and buy chew toys to preoccupy your pet. These are safer and more effective.

usually when a dog eats grass/weeds, and possibly stones, that means it has an upset stomach. Maybe the food you are feeding it doesn't agree with its stomach. If it keeps up, ask the vet

Well you need to keep an eye on her all the time. You don't leave a puppy alone like that when they are young they can not only hurt their throats but could die if she can't cough whatever it is out. You need to supervise a small dog all the time especially when there is stuff that she can eat, or play with.

Your puppy might be instinctively trying to supplement it's diet with minerals (from stones) and vegetation.

I add kelp powder to my dogs' diet occasionally (once a week because they are already on a super premium food loaded with supplements) and have never seen them eat grass or stones.
