Go to http://update.Microsoft.com. Click on custom and let the site scan your system. It may prompt you install a Windows Validation Tool (everone is told to). The site will tell you if your copy is legal.
Mine wasn't. It didn't make a difference for me for about 2 years.

It is hard to tell if it is an illegal copy. Usually when you run the windows xp updates off of microsofts website it might detect whether it is an illegal copy or not. Plus by not having the disk you can't re-load windows.

Most likely yes, but the copy on the system is likely to be an OEM version of Windows installed at the factory which is fairly common.

just go on the microsoft site and it will automatically be checked
if it were bought from a shop then it will probably be legal, repitable comp shops buy a wholesale licence so they are able to put ligit copies on.

Did you get the install disks? If so, you are legal, but you have to run it by MicroSoft.
