Yes, so much brutality training fighing men! Every time I see your question it is about DI's and abuse! I think you are what the military personel consider FUBAR ,and you were probably kicked out for being so!

Some of what you talk about contravenes current USMC guidelines, but at the end Marines find that they're better prepared to deal with the hell of combat than members of other services, so a little pain now saves a lot of blood later. The primary purpose of boot camp is not to teach you how to operate the equipment but to reorient you from a civilian life in which concepts like "it doesn't make sense to me" about water intake, for instance, lead you to drink, to a military mode of thinking: "The chain of command are looking after the logistics, and say not to drink. I both hope and assume they know what they're doing." Often in military service getting an explanation or hesitating or questioning orders will get people killed. So now you train for that basic life, and later when that's in the depths of your mindset you can add back the more refined layers of thought. That's why what you're in is called "basic" training.

Ok, let me ask YOU a few questions. If you were there that would mean you are a Marine. Is that right? Why are you asking civilians about military training for which they have no experience? All Drill Instructors have their own ways of getting through and breaking people down to make Marines and unless you have successfully completed a Drill Instructors tour of duty you have no business questioning tactics. If you're still confused to why the cookie boy was on the quarter deck fisting the entire bag down his neck it was to show control, embarrassment, and to mentally confuse and put fear in the entire platoon. To get treats and goodies from home out of their minds and the mission in. it's discipline for which you apparently have none.

If you saw this happen, you should have brought it to the attention of the Senior Drill Instructor, and I guarantee you something would have been done.

I went through MCRD San Diego in 1995, while learning to drill, working on column right's, I was pulled out of ranks by a DI and choked for not learning quick enough. The incident was passed on to the Senior Drill Instructor. That DI was never seen in our platoon again.

There is always someone who tries to get past the rules set up for everyone. Mommy ought not be sending her precious baby boy cookies when he's supposed to be training and getting in shape. I don't feel bad for that guy because anyone with half a brain knows there are certain things that aren't allowed and if he chooses to ignore that then let him take the consequences.

Where the hell did you think you were going Private Benjamin, summer camp? Mailing cookies is against the DI's rules. Did you share that with the civilians? What you were to learn was discipline, and to learn who was to give orders and who was to follow them. The end!

I faced far worse than this at Parris Island, and didn't cry to mama about it. I could tell you some real stories, but won't cause then of course, I'd have to kill you afterwards, and we don't want that do we.

They do it in the air force as well... some girl asked about post cards... they aren't recommended because the Instructors generally read them aloud to the whole flight.

ADD: And as for Leela's comment (probably raised by draft dodgers) Eating until regurgitation is hardly cruel. In all branches of the armed services basic/boot camp/etc. is a hard time, not really a time for milk and cookies and the parents should realize this. While the trainee may have told his family not to send these things or otherwise be it not his fault, it was poor form for his mother to send him these items and her son had to deal with the consequences of her weakness. and as for being war mongers... I'm sure almost all the people in the armed forces would rather stay at home, train, go home to their significant other or go to the bar to find another one night stand... than go to the AOR and get shot at, blown up, or otherwise endure the hardships of war... you have the freedom to say what you want, and while i think you should STFU, i (and the rest of the armed forces) will continue to fight so you can still say what you want when you want..

For the rest of us... its Festivus

I'm almost positive that when you get to mcrd they make you send your 1st letter home and it says don't send any bulky items, FOOD (other than protein bars, powerade, and multi-vitamins) so i really don't believe the authenticity of your story and if it did happen oh well grow some balls and quit whining.....i think everybody knows you're not a marine also because marines do not whine like bitches.

The sadistic Di was on a power trip. More of a punishing role than a training role. He has authority over the recruit who can't fight back and is taking full advantage of it. What he receives from home is none the Di's business but unfortunatly rank covers him.
If the recruit reports him the boy is labled a squeeler and mama's boy which is what this scum is trying to provoke. There will have
to be changes to stop this kind of behaviour. One thing to make a man out of somebody and another to take advantage of a situation to carry out your sick sadism.

A friend of mine went to the Citadel and had something similar happen to him. He told me that during his freshman year, his mother sent him some food and he caught all kinds of grief for it. He said the proper conduct is to make the food community food. If its sent to the sodiers ok. I think it has something to do with trying to make the soldiers lose their individuality and become a unit.

The only lesson here is that they DI has the freedom to humiliate you in any way possible. Moms have every right to send cookies and recruits have every right to receive them. This is a power show designed to break the recruit. For those who answered that a recruit shouldn't be getting mail from mom - WTF?

Typical overactive testosterone laden boneheads training good kids to be killers - this type of behavior will never teach a person to be a good soldier - sad, so sad.

Mrs. Belcher is a bit of a *****.

There is a difference between something being specifically against the rules and something else if Mom didn't know she was doing something she shouldn't but the specific humilation by the DI is designed only to make you a KILLER and has NOTHING to do with being a soldier...F U CKin Stupid American War pigs will never see anything but how right it is to break a person. Hmmm that seems harsh - oh wait y'all prefer no holds barred - repeat F u CK in American war PIGS - your military isn't supposed to be about murder but that seems to be your preference.

Reality is harsh pill.
