How can I secure a car title or lien release letter from Citigroup Financial who bought my original finance company Transouth.
I've been getting the run around from them stating they have no record of my car and car payoff 3 years ago. Unfortunately, I do not recall my account number with original finance company (transouth). Can someone advise me on how to secure a title and or lien release letter so I can sell the car?
In advance, thanks for your assistance.

What you need is a letter form them saying that they no longer have any record of a lien on your vehicle. They wording is:

To whom it may concern,
Citigroup Financial, the successor to Transouth, no longer has a security interest in the following vehicle.

Year Make VIN

Signed

Title

If they have no record of you owing money, the should issue the release. If they will not, you may need to consult a lawyer!

Edit to note that bostonianinmo is correct in that some, not all states require the letter to be notarized. Some do not. For example, in Maryland it is not required.

It is understandable that a dealership would sell a car without having the title in hand...otherwise they would need 2 lots to hold all of the cars that were waiting for lein holders to release title. That being said, it is unreasonable for them to even ask you to drive a car without a current tag or temporary registration. Should you get a ticket, they certainly would be the one's to pay for it. You should go back to the dealership and raise the roof over this. You have paid for something that you haven't recieved and are now being told to break the law. They must take whatever measures are necessary to bring you within compliance of the law. Good luck

Contact DMV, (Dept. Motor Vehicles), they may be able to help you. They should know who held/holds the original title and will know if the lien was released. DMV should/may know.
Give them any info and the VIN, Vehicle Identification Number.

No, they cannot. I work at a major car dealership, and we cannot do that. If you leave our lot, and you get pulled over by a cop, and you have no proof that the car is yours. YOu will get in trouble, and so will we!! Also, you need a temp license plate for your car. Its already Feb, and you still have not received anything? Did you buy the car cash, or finance (not in house finance)

Addendum to fire4511's correct statement: It needs to be notarized. Take it to the DMV and they'll give you a clear title.
