I'm taking Amoxicillin for a throat infection. A friend of mine told me not to drink while I'm taking it because it will make them ineffective. I'm not talking about going on a bender or anything, just having a few beers. The doctor didn't mention anything about it, also the pill bottle and paper work don't mention alcohol either.

Alcohol breaks down in the system when it is metabolised by the cells in the liver, these cells use fats to react with the alcohol to destroy it (alcohol is after all is said and done a poison used by certain microorganisms to kill off competing microorganisms). It is these alcoholic fats (I can't remember the name) that will react with the antibiotics, and based on the fats available will either inactivate the antibiotics, enhance them or even make them toxic and potentially lethal (by the way it is these fats that cause the hang over effect and not the alcohol, so if you want to avoid a hang over after a bender avoid fatty foods like the plague.). The best advice is to never drink alcohol when taking meds or if absolutely necessary only the smallest amount possible. Hope this helps.

If possible, alcohol should generally be avoided with all medication but you CAN drink alcohol with Amoxicillin. It is a complete myth that alcohol prevents penicillin antibiotics from working. The only antibiotics that you must avoid with alcohol are the Metronidazole type antibiotics- they have a direct interaction with alcohol. You can check with your Pharmacist if you are unsure, but I am not wrong. Doesn't say you have to avoid alcohol in the drug advise leaflet that comes with the drug does it? Exactly. Ignore all the above answers who have said that alcohol will stop the antibiotic from working; if people do not have the correct knowledge they really should avoid answering medical questions.

Every time I've been on antibiotics, or any time any of my friends or family have been, the prescribing doctor has said not to drink alcohol. It does impede the effects of the antibiotics. If you're unsure, it's probably better not to drink any alcohol until you've spoken to your doctor. You can call the doctors office and ask the question without having to go in for an office visit.

If you are taking perscription medication, you are stupid not to ask your doctor or pharmasist before drinking. There are usually warning lables but there is a reason why so much education is required to become a pharmicist.
