Having too much work on your desktop will not slow down your computer. Having a ton of programs opened at once usually slows down your computer. Click on start and then click on run.
Type msconfig

Under the start-up tab. If everything is checked, it means everything on that list opens up when you turn on your computer. Even though you don't see them open up. Uncheck any program that you want to close and click on apply.

Caution: Only uncheck programs you know about.

Not directly. It's the installation of software applications that require certain kind of start-up that slows down the computer start-up. If you've installed many things and allowed some kind of tracker, with an icon shown in the system tray, then even if you don't have relevant desktop icons, the computer start-up is still slower. One way to speed up is to customize the installation without checking automatic monitoring etc. Or you may be able to change the application properties to realize this.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

No, it should not slow your computer. Only if you keep several
applications open at the same time, then it will slow down a
little, and a lot depends on the application size and files contained
within it. Keep what you use most and discard others from front
row or desktop, you can always drag the the application back
when needed.

ACTUALLY, YES! The icons on your desktop are constantly being refreshed my windows to make sure that the program still exists and that is shows its icon correctly, cleanring some of these or making a folder on your desktop called desktop will help out.

Yes, To clear up you Desktop why don't you create a Folder /Folders in 'My Documents' to keep your shortcuts in. Organise in a List or Thumbnails. The best way to have a quick start up is to select what programs should start up Automatically.

no. What slows you down are the programs that run at startup.
