I have an idea to have a painting done for my husband but I have NO IDEA how to go about doing this, who to contact or how much it will cost. I'd like someone fimilar to Maryland so he/she understands what I want done. I dont know any artists and am not fimilar with the art world at all but I have this super idea that would be so touching to my husband. He lost his fav Grandfather and both his adopted father and biological father all in a few months this year and the painting I have in mind would represent all of them. I emailed a few gallerys that came up when I searched for easter shore art but no one has responded. I dont care about who the artist is as long as it a good painting (landscape/water) and is reasonably priced.
Can anyone help with pointing me in the right direction? I really do know where to go for this. Thanks in advance!

Look in the phone book and find a few art galleries. Head over to the galleries and look at the paintings until you find one in a style you like. Then, talk to the gallery owner or manager and they should be able to either give you the contact info of the artist or they'll be able to let the artist know you're interested. Part of the galleries job is to help the artist get recognized. After all, a well known artists works sell for more so they should be happy to help you out. You should go to the gallery rather than email because it'll be harder for them to just brush you off, plus they'll know you're serious about it.

You should know that paintings, oils in particular, are expensive to have done and can take quite some time to complete. If you want something faster you could try finding an artist that works in pastels or acrylic paints, though most fine art gallery paintings are likely in oils.

You could also look up any local art schools in your area. You could probably post a notice on their bulletin board. The students there would probably be more than happy to help you out and it would cost you a lot less. Ask to see their portfolio and choose the student with the style you like.

Also, you could try searching the internet for "Artist Groups" or something similar and see if you can find one in your area. Artists like to group together to share information on technique and marketing ideas so there should be one around your area.

If you're really desperate you can try putting an add in the classifieds of your newspaper. Also, Craigslist.com would be a good place to post an ad (see the link below).

Try contacting the local arts college and ask how to go about interviewing students about doing a painting for you someone there will be glad to make some money I am sure.

Most fine artists, professional fine artists, don't really want to be told what to do. So you may be limited to students or commercial artists. Try a local art school and put a note on a bulletin board. Also, try Craigslist.
