Yes vanilla and vanilla extract are the same.
thing . Real vanilla extract come from the extraction of the flavor in a vanilla bean using alcohol.
Artificial vanilla comes from the vanillin in tree's
If you happen to drive through a forest of Ponderosa pines you will pick up the smell of vanilla.
Do not use Mexican vanilla ,it contains coumadin which is a blood thinner.

Same thing! Myself I prefer to use Watkins Banana Extract rather than Vanilla.. Sometimes I even put slices of bananas in cookies! Why make what everyone else does?
A good cook loves to cook and experiments alot! Cooking is fun. Even good cooks use recipes as a general guideline but they modify them. A good cook knows what can be modified and what can't! Have fun baking your cookies Merry Xmas!

I think they're the same as long as they're both liquids. You don't want to buy the vanilla bean for your cookies. For the best flavor, use pure vanilla extract....don't use the synthetic. It's well worth the extra $$.

Sheena,

Yes they are the same thing. I guess saying vanilla extract all the time, they figured you know that they are talking about if they just say vanilla. Good luck with the baking. Check out www.allrecipes.com or foodtv.com or www.hersheys.com for more baking hints. Good for first timers: www.kraftfoods.com

Hope this helps!

It's not your fault, it's the recipe writer's. Unless it says vanilla beans or seeds further down in the recipe, it's a safe bet that its vanilla extract. Another clue that its extract is if the recipe calls for the amount of vanilla in teaspoons.

Real vanilla is not sold in the US because it contains a drug called coumadin, which has been known to be bad for the liver (large quantities, that is). Extract is the safe version sold in the US, and tastes almost as good. IF you can get your hands on some real vanilla, it really is sweeter and better, in my opinion. It is sold in Mexico - know anyone who lives near the border that could pick some up for you?
