Go to SoHo and visit the great shopping spots (Chanel, Louis Vitton, etc.) and eat at Peep - this totally fun Asian fusion restaurant with see-through bathroom walls - well, not really. You can see the diners but they can't see you. Nevertheless, it messes with your head to pee with a bunch of strangers "looking" at you. The food and the martinis are good, too. The restaurant is on Prince Street. Call information to get exact address. And yes, most places are open 24/7. It's my old home. I miss it sooooo much.
As for hotels, stay AWAY from anything under $250 a night. Seriously. They are all dives. New York is expensive. There's no getting around it. If you have money to burn, do the SoHo Grand or W Hotel (the one downtown where the fun is).
Have a blast!

There are many places in NYC that are cool and are missed by most tourist. If you are talking music the place to be is down on Bleecker street many good bars/clubs down there.
For food there is a good place in the west villiage called Boxers that has a great burger and beer is always cold. I also love the restaurants at the South Street Seaport.
The Milford plaza by the bus terminal is always offering cheap rates on hotel rooms.
If you dont want to spend money on the ferry to go to the statue of Liberty you can take the free ferry to Staten Island and still get a glimse of the statue as you go by. They also sell beer on the ferry!
