no offense, but why do athiests post in forums about religeon? if they're athiest why should they care and furthermore why should they have a say in it? it's actually quite rude to hear "this is stupid" or "no one cares" well obviously someone does care, I'm not saying all athiests do it, I'm just asking why the ones that do do it, do it.
I'm christian and It seems pointless, I mean alot fo you athiests don't even know the first thing about half these religeons, so why post? just for points? nah, I'm kidding, but seriously guys.
this is not meant to offend anyone, just to hear what people say and get their opinion

Religion is about beliefs. Atheists do not believe in a God, but they do have a belief. So why shouldn't they express their opinion? Besides there is no rule book saying you must be religious to post in the religion section.

Your religion affects all of us. I for one am a proponent of human rights, and actual morality. Frankly, Christians, Muslims, and other religious groups do a great job at destroying these 2 important values. These religions are not based on anything factual. They are an appeal to emotion and a matter of opinion.
If i am to be influenced by such nonsense i should at least have a say in it, don't you think.
On top of this i find the subject of religion fascinating. I, like many other atheists, study religion for the sheer intellectual boost of learning about something that is so deeply interwoven with our culture. It's fun. To say we don't know the first thing about religion is not only wrong, but paints a picture of your ignorance. I would wager that many of us know a lot more about religion than you do. When people like you ask questions like this it projects an extreme hubris, and elitism. You are not the king of Yahoo Answers, so what importance does our presence here have on you?
And finally... you are about the 1,000th person to ask this exact same question... try looking at the suggestions or doing a search before asking these types of questions.

Atheists in general know more about these things than believers do. Look at the questions and answers - the believers keep saying things like "How can you prove that there is no God?" or "if we came from monkeys, how come there are still monkeys?" or "Atheists choose to be atheists because it's an excuse to behave badly". You don't see atheist making those kinds of mistakes (though some do still say "How can God condemn people to hell?").
I don't like the "no-one cares" responses when someone obviously does, but that's by no means an atheist issue: believers are as likely to say that. As far as the "this is stupid" response, I suspect that atheists are more likely to say it, but then, the believers here are more likely to say those kinds of stupid things that I listed above (for example, notice the guy below who claims that "no-one believes in god like an atheist").
As MaryAnne (below) points out, most American atheists started out as believers. Atheists know a LOT more about what it is to believe than believers know about atheism: after all, we've been on both sides, and believers typically have not. I myself have 9 years of religious education, I was confirmed after some serious Bible study, I've spoken from the pulpit and taken adult Christian education courses, and I work at a Catholic institution. And I live in a nation that is full to the brim with Christians, who dominate the media, government, education, entertainment...
Later -
You may not accept the fact that atheists know more about religion than do believers, but it's a fact. You're simply wrong.
Why did you ask the question if you didn't want the right answer? Why are you posting questions on this forum about religion if you don't care to get answers to your questions?

I was just wondering the same thing. It seems that there is a large group out there that "get's off" on challenging Christianity. It's almost a reverse prostelytizing...an anti-Christian fanaticism. It's as if the idea of a belief in God (especially a loving God) is a threat to them in some personal way. Pointing out human frailties and inadequacies is hardly a reflection on God, but rather a reflection on mankind. God is perfect---mankind is definitely not.
Christians strive to try to live in a Christlike manner and fail constantly. It's the nature of humanity to fail. We are imperfect.

I saw this question so often on Yahoo Q&A that I created a video about it. "Why do Atheists care about Religion?"
Atheists post on sites like this for several reasons.
1. Many think that irrational belief systems like religion represent a danger to humanity. 9-11 being an example.
2. I see my rights and freedoms being affected by the religious.
3. I see my tax dollars being spent on things I don't believe in, like the "faith-based initiative".
4. Many atheists left former religions and wish to share their wisdom with others who are still involved.
5. Many like the attention of being controversial or being a rebel.

As long as Christianity, as well as several of the other "ultimate truths", have as their end and gleefully sought after goal, the END OF THE WORLD, and as long as they believe that their rights are being violated if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat, you will have to put up with us being in your face. Why should we abandon a forum where we can let you know that you will not be allowed to carry out the silly "End Times" rubbish that you seem to forget would include the rest of us.

This is a religion and spirituality forum, and it is entirely possible for a person who does not believe in a higher power to be spiritual.
And in my experience, most atheists know a great deal about religion, often quite a bit more than those practicing it.

There are many non believers here that are extremely familiar with your bible. They are here to respond to question directed at them. They are on here to help show how ridiculous the idea of creationism is.
They are on here so that many religious people can see that atheists are just normal people like you and me. They just have a different way of seeing some things.

Have you seen the amount of questions that are about atheists here? Have you ever heard of religion as a scholarly discipline? Some Atheists, like myself, find it a good topic of discussion, and many of us are baffled at how people buy into these obvious myths.

I know the bible well enough to answer this question:

Remember, in North America, most atheists don't start out as atheists. Nearly all were raised in homes where some form of religion -- usually Christianity -- was practiced more or less devoutly. So you needn't accuse us of not knowing the subject; we know it as well as you, maybe a bit better.
