I didn't find out until a couple of years ago, that my stomach ulcer was caused by a virus that I had caught. Weird.
The fact that I was also under a great deal of stress at the time didn't help matters. Fortunately, I was able to get out of that environment and the ulcer has just about disappeared all on its own.
As for prevention? I really don't know. Wish I did. It might possibly have saved me a great deal of misery.

Well, the two most common causes of both gastric (stomach) and duodenal (first part of the small intestine) are H. pylori (a type of bacteria) and NSAID use (things like motrin, advil, etc.), so the first thing to do once you have a confirmed ulcer (by endoscopy is the most effective way to make sure) is to stop taking the medications that may cause it and there is a regimen of three medications, usually two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor (a medicine that prevents your stomach from producing acid) if you're found to have H. pylori.
As for how to prevent ulcers, other than not overdoing it with advil, there's not a whole lot you can do about it, we're not sure why some people develop ulcers with H. pylori and others don't, many, and probably most people carry it, but only a small fraction of them will develop problems.
Hope it helps.

It was recently found that stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria, therefore the best and probably only cure is a coarse of antibiotics.
