I think people should realize that wars with large developed countrys that have nukes can turn into a blood bath very fast. And by blood bath I mean the seas being filled with human blood all around the world. First off the country probably wont use its nukes unless it feels actualy threatened so a small scermish probably wont set off a hole world nuke battel... But if you are actualy trying to invade and take one of these countrys over you get them to launch nukes at everyone and everything they can just so they can start a war with every country that will probably lead to more nukes going off if not all of them. This inturn leads to a world almost totaly gone as far as humans are concerned if not totaly. Basicaly if the US or any other country becomes "dumb" enoth to start that type of war we can all pretty much kiss our race good bye and wish the cockroaches good luck in the next one. This is why diplomacy is sooooo important and you have to really mean it I think 1/2 of the people who get into gov have a desire to see the world end honestly its just the force that drives them imo. SO we the people who understand this and want a better world need to be doing our best to stop these people from getting and staying in office. That begs the question of how do you know someone wants to see the world end? Well you cant but supporting a war against a country that hasnt attacked us is a good sign.

Most likely we would win, unless we tried a ground invasion into China. If you look at our leading air and technological superiority we most likely would win in an offensive. However, the chinese have the largest Army, Navy and Airforce in the world. If they chose to attack first it may prove interesting if it remains a conventional war. Remember before 1991 Iraq had the fourth largest Army in the world. If it goes nuclear no one will really win, but the United States would survive and all of China will glow for a long time. But, If Russia was to be involved it would change everything. This year Russia and China joined in joint military excersises.

Difficult to say. Numbers wise we lose- studies have shown that if every chinese person were given a spear and every american an assault rifle, we would still lose. However, America posses a huge technological advantage allowing it to gain air supperority within days. Overall, it is very tough. The deciding factor may very well be the skill of the commanders, in which the US wins hands down. Afterall, we don't spend as much as china on military, but we train our troops far better. And as to the submarine thing- they're just showing off, the US enjoys doing it too, except we don't get caught unless we want to (generally speaking). The US generally stalks everyone of Russia's SBBN's (Their nuclear missle submarines) just incase something bad happens.

In all actuality, submarines are extremely difficult to detect, so it's no surprise that they were able to sneak up on us. Anyway, if we did go to war with China, chances are nuclear weapons would end up in play, and it'd all be over then. If nobody used nukes, it would be a long and grueling war. We've got a technological edge, but they've got a massive amount of people. I don't see either side winning if we go to war.

since they didn't fire on the Kittyhawk, we won't be going to war with China. If they fired on and sunk the Kittyhawk, if it wasn't in their controlled waters then that might be another story. Also if the Kittyhawk was in China's coastal waters, and within 50 nautical miles of China's shores, that could be considered an act of war by us, unless they knew we were comming and knew it was not a war cruise. It's not uncommon for another countries subs to shaddow a ship, commercial or military. Our subs do it all the time. So do Russia's, china's, and any other military power.

Nah, we'll win. Unlike Iraq which is Guerilla Ware style now, our military is trained for huge wars.

If and when the US fights a war with China, we will not win. Not that I would root for China, but Chinese military capabilities are grossly underestimated by the general American public. Their military spending should not be feared, for it is their overall mastery of warfare (most importantly, strategy) that must be watched. As Sun Tzu says, “Know yourself but not the enemy, your chances of victory is half. Know your enemy and know yourself, and you will never be in peril.”

Many people who say that the US will point to the technological advantage that we have over the Chinese. To them, I would give the counter-argument that technology actually can hinder us as much as it helps us. Our troops will have to spend more of their time training and learning how to use such advanced technology that they will have less time to learn and train in the most basic warrior skills (like hand-to-hand combat, tactics, etc). Advanced technology can also burden our troops by removing their natural senses and lulls them in a false sense of security and ability. Night vision goggles can blind our troops when the enemy suddenly uses a flash of light. Thermal equipment is less effective in rain or when it’s hot all around. Finally, technology can be countered by deception and by plain sneakiness. For example, in the Korean War, entire Chinese divisions were able to sneak through the border, even as it was constantly watched by aerial reconnaissance. Air superiority can be countered by weather as well, or the enemy just digs in deep and creates bomb-proof shelters like the ones the VC and NVA made during the Vietnam War. Our “state of the art” carrier groups can be easily crippled by China’s diesel submarines as can be shown by the USS Kitty Hawk incident. This would also reduce our naval and aerial superiority, which would be important in a conflict with China. Chinese diesel subs working as wolf packs can penetrate the defensive perimeter of an US carrier group; even if they were all sunk, they would have crippled our Pacific forces.

And as for our strategy, tactics, training, and leadership, the Chinese may be better at all of them when compared to the United States as well. The Chinese are well-versed with Sun Tzu’s Art of War, and are masters at the direct and indirect methods of fighting. Sun Tzu’s work has survived thousands of years, and actually works (hence it’s still existing?). The White House and Pentagon couldn’t tell between Sun Tzu and Wang Chung. Strategy wise, the Chinese will develop solid strategies based upon the guidelines of The Art of War. Tactically, the Chinese will also be proficient because they must face an enemy with overwhelming firepower and technological advantage. Again, using the Art of War, they will concoct an arsenal of tactics that would defeat our advantage in firepower and technology. Historically, the Chinese have shown their mastery in positional warfare, mobile warfare, and guerilla warfare, evidenced in the Korean War (when they were able to push the Americans back to the 38th parallel even as they did not have heavy weaponry, air support, and hardly enough rifles for its troops followed by a lack of winter wear and suffering the mountainous terrain of North Korea) and the Chinese Civil War (when the Communists were somehow able to rid of the Nationalist government despite it being set in stone, with military advantage, etc). As for training, the Chinese must work with little, and thus, will compensate a material disadvantage with first rate training, especially for the active forces. Sneakiness and deception are emphasized as a counter to American advantages. The Chinese leadership is not fragmented at the highest level, and as for the Chinese military commanders, their lack of experience will lead to initial defeats but their dedication to the Art of War will ultimately help them win (Yes, Sun Tzu stresses the importance of military genius and leadership as well).
We can rule nuclear warfare out as well. Like the Soviets and Americans during the Cold War, both China and the US understand that starting nuclear war would be suicidal for the entire world. And because the goal of a country is to survive and flourish, it would be stupid to engage in mutually assured destruction.

Lastly, China will no doubt find out ways of winning without fighting, as Sun Tzu advocates. They can do so by leveraging their economic status against us. By crippling us economically, we will not be able to fight a war in the first place. So, let’s hope that hostilities with China will never emerge. Both our countries will be better off without it.
