Other sites try to sell a monitoring service. The first month is free and then they start charging you.

It's because the site you're using will charge you after the first 30 days and enroll you in a credit monitoring program. If you're looking for the free credit report site, it's located at:
http://www.annualcreditreport.com
You can order a credit report from each of the 3 bureaus once every 12 months.

Two possible reasons.
1. You may be signing up for a 'free trial' of a credit monitoring service.
2. They may compare the number to you credit report to verify you are who you say you are.

Some agencies ask you questions to verify who you are. Typically they will give you a choice of 4 to 5 questions. One of them may ask for your credit card number. This is normal operating procedure.
If they ask you for the number before you get to the site, they are trying to sell you a monthly program for credit checks. This is BS, legally you are required to receive one report from each agency each year.
Side note: Isn't it BS, what they put you thru, just to get your credit report. Then, they won't even give you a score unless you pay for it.

No such thing as a free lunch. When you accept their deal you also accept other "catche's". May I suggest you read the fine prints and NOT ACCEPT but instead deal with your bank advisor.
Otherwise you will likely see a debit on your card after 30 days or so and good or bad credit you are expected to pay.
PS Please may you win lottery and see many bank advisors.

You don't need to. If you need a free copy of your credit report without the credit score please go to annualcreditreport.com. Don't go the freecreditreport.com. The freecreditreport.com will want you to sign up for a free 30 day trial and then they will start charging you.
