Mechanical Engineering is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. ME already had a universal quality about it. Now, this aspect is allowing for new types of cross collaboration.

Take MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) for instance. The field is a conjunction of materials, solid mechanics, electronics, and IC fabrication.

Another example: computational design of MEMS. In addition to the above, add computer intelligence driven by optimization. This is a true confluence of key Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Comp Sci principles.

While 'traditional' engineering areas will always exist, the distinction between them is getting increasingly blurred. The engineers of the future will have a solid understanding of the fundamental 'engineering sciences' that are common to all engineering disciplines. This will enable him or her to more readily combine different engineering techniques in cross disciplinary applications.

As I mentioned in an earlier response, gone are the days of closed - ended engineering problems. The engineering of tomorrow will require more creativity, especially the type that arises from combining different disciplines.
