The main thing you need is less than 8% body fat. At approx 11% body fat I have a four pack. To carve out the bottom part of your abs you need to get below 8%. What helped me bring out the four pack wasn't just doing lots of reps, but doing heavy, weighted reps.

You won't get a 6 pack if you have fat over the muscles. You also have to do the crunches correctly or you're just burning a few calories.

Your need to do them every day. AND you need to do a sport or work out. A six pack wont come that easy.

never mind situps! they wont do you any good wharsoever til you get rid of some body fat! intense fat burning activity is what you need--skiing, rowing, cycling, jogging, rollerblading, tennis, racquetball. do this for a few months along with cutting out junk food and starch. then when you can see a flat stomach--start defining the abs with situps, crunches, raises etc.

There is no magic number, but you have to do them every day and you have to eat healthy. Your genes also play a role.
