Free antivirus will find an quarantine viruses but will not heal and/or remove them.
You can download full versions of AVG, Norton and many other good Anti-Virus programs for free on the internet... I have AVG 7.5 full network edition and it's great... took me 2 minutes to download and cost me nothing :)
I've just had a look at some of your answers and people saying this and that lol
f you have Limewire, Kazaa or a Bittorrent etc download AVG 7.5 full and you will get it for free and it will cover everything that needs covering... Email etc etc and it's in real time.

Hello,
Answer is YES!! you can definately trust AVG Free (version 7.5)which is the latest version, it has some very good features, features that are every bit as good if not better than many other AV programs.
I have used most of the well known commercial anti virus software packages and AVG free is every bit as good as the claims made for it, in my opinion.
I took Norton 2002 off my machine and had a dreadful time trying to uninstall it, in the end I had to download a special Symantec removal tool before I could get rid of it. A right pain too.
No! AVG free is a highly rated program 10 out of 10 for sure, I'd happy recommend this program to you, its very reliable & trustworthy.

That's a good question, you get what you pay for I guess. I think every anti-virus program is going to fail at some point, but something like McAfee or Symantec will probably be alot quicker in getting new definitions out for new viruses. A free program may get the same information, but not as fast. If you are using a home computer with casual internet browsing, I think a free program is more than enough. People get kind of crazy with all the security software they get for their home computers when all they use them for is checking their mail and surfing nfl.com.

Trust me, it's much safer to buy from trusted sources. Some freeware sites actually embed problems on to your computer just so they can claim to have cleared them! Good antivirus doesn'thave to cost a lot and it can be a really worthwhile investment. There's a good website here which has an independent review.
Good luck!

Free anti-virus can be obtained from some sites but from most is a scam, it's much safer to buy software as it will always be safe and work well

yes, they can be fine, I used AVG until recently, I think as of next year they are going to be charging for it though, right now, I have Avast antivirus, which seems to work fine, but of course who's to know which one has a more detailed virus database.

as the saying goes u get what u pay for, its ok but its not the best, its better to have one than none, it does a reasonable job, if u have a free one its better to combine it with spywareguard, this will tell u evrytime when some program are making a change and u can let it change things or make it stop, it will tell u what program is attempting to change and to what
