My son is 14 months old and climbing all over the place. I've been thinking about going and getting a toddler bed instead of his crib lately. Is it too soon....what age did you put your child in a real bed.

My son was 14 months when he made the switch. Like yours, he was climbing all over and I thought he'd fall and hurt himself so I bought him a toddler bed to sleep in. Now at 17 months he loves it, and has not fallen out once! I like it because when he's super tired he'll put himself to bed which saves me some time!

We moved our kids to a bed at 2 years and it went pretty well. We have the side guards to keep them in bed and a small step stool a the foot of the bed so they could get in and out on their own. Your son sounds pretty active so expect to spend the first few nights putting him back in bed a lot, but they figure it out pretty fast.

A friend of ours avoided a crib completely and put her son on a mattress on the floor as soon as she brought him home. This might be an alternative for you since a 14 month old might not be able to handle getting in and out of a bed with both the frame and mattress.

Good luck!

My son is 21 months and we are getting him a toddler bed next month. Right now, when he wakes up he jumps up and down in his crib, causing it to move across the room LOL

I would suggest starting with a toddler bed and moving to a big boy bed when he is older. Toddler beds have bulit in side rails for safety and are a more appropriate size. Most also have a weight limit of up to 50 lbs.

My son is three and he's just now getting to a twin bed. His crib converted to a toddler bed and I believe we converted it when he was around your son's age because he kept climbing out of the crib and it was getting dangerous

Gee, that was over 50 years ago, I just don't remember.

With our girls, and the 6 grandchildren, when they could go over the top, time to take off the rails.

That was the first toddler bed. Removed the rail away from the wall. Got the real toddler bed around 3.

We put our girls in toddler beds at 2. But we did it b/c their doctor said since they were so tall that they had a higher chance of falling over onto their heads (I have twin girls). They were never huge climbers though... They didn't even get out of their toddler beds til I came in the room & told them they would get out. My friend, who has a boy & girl, used that net that goes over the crib to keep them from climbing out. The only problem she had was as they got older they were able to open the netting themselves which defeats the purpose. 14 months may be alittle young...if you do get a bed, be ready to clean up messes & you will probably have to monitor him to make sure he lays in bed & actually sleeps. At that age they still really need a good nap. Good luck whatever you decide to do!!!

My son is 15 months old and we started when he was 14 months. He does really good in it. At about 13 months he started to hate his crib. I have to get him to sleep by rocking him then I put him in the bed and he sleeps all night. The little bed we have has sides on it to keep him from falling off the bed. It is also very low so that if he does happen to fall it wont hurt him. Hope this helps you.

(also if you have any tips on how you get your kid to sleep with out having to rock or hold him to sleep, I would greatly appreciate it..my email is hthki2@aol.com

We moved our son to a big boy bed at 18 months because he would get his legs stuck between the bars, and would love to climb out and jump out of it. He loves his new bed, and stays put for the most part. He does get up in the middle of the night and play with his toys sometimes, but otherwise is a good sleeper. Good luck with whatever you decide to do... Happy Hoolidays!
