It seems that atheists are starting to gain some voice, largely because of the dominance of the country's right-wing religious extremists. Americans in general want something in the middle - we want to live our lives without threats, hold down jobs, feed our families, etc. Since the dominant extremism is the far right, and particularly the far religious right, centrist Americans are becoming more and more comfortable with atheism. We're simply seen as a counterweight to the biggest threat the nation faces.
The biggest movement will come from the young. People in their teens and 20s are far less likely to accept the far right bigotries against gays and lesbians, atheists, pro-choice folks, and even against things like transexuality. They have grown up in a world in which a fairly ridiculous group of loud juvenile religious zealots have had a very real impact on the country's direction, and they don't like it. In the near future it will be much more difficult for the religious far right to attack America.
This is also good news for religion - there are clear signs that these changes are forcing religious groups to act more maturely. Even the Christian Coalition recently considered devoting some of its resources to real issues like global warming. They did defeat that proposal, but I believe that it will return. I think that atheism might wind up rescuing religion from pathetic irrelevance.

Well i blame religion for Atheism-because when you force it and force it on people and them condemn them because of some stupid mis-interpretation then of course people are not going to want to believe in a hate filled lie-I personally am not atheist or of an denomination -I am a free -spirited person and believe in GOD but not in a religious tone..PEACE TO ALL

Atheism is just barely able to stand on the brakes long enough to keep religionist trash from plunging the entire country into a theocratic dictatorship. If the country is saved, it will be due to their efforts and you will have to thank them.

Kids are so busy learning how to put condoms on cucumbers in school that they don't have enough time to learn who won World War 2 in school. I am still shocked that my daughter didn't know that.

Due to secular progressive infiltration in the school system, many children are being brainwashed into believing that there is no God. Sadly, atheism is spreading

I think that after 9/11 and how the Bush administration has blurred the separation of church & state, many atheists are becoming more active.
I think many atheists (such as myself) see religion as dangerous and are actively trying to educate people about it.
I also think that atheists want to put a stronger wall between church and state again.
I do NOT think that atheists are out to make religion illegal and do not see any efforts towards that. I would actively campaign to support a person's right to beleive whatever they want.
