We used vinegar and it helped my now 13 year old. He was 4 at the time. We also used it for lying. It worked wonders!
As for soap... I wouldn't even go there! A small child in a nearby town died last year because his mother's boyfriend put soap in his mouth as punishment, and he actually aspirated on it and it literally drown him. of course there had to be alot of soap to do that, but even still, ANYTHING can happen. At least with vinegar, it's 'food' and in small amounts, will not harm a child. If they like vinegar (which I doubt) I would consider using a SMALL amount of hot sauce, but only if I KNEW my child was not allergic to it.

I would not endorse this practise. I just checked this out in the Internet and the practise of hot saucing the tongue is not considered safe even if the sauce is diluted. The hot sauce has the potential to cause burns to the tongue, esophagus and/or stomach.due to the fact it can cause the tongue to swell it may also be a choking hazard. In some places it is leagally considered abuse. You should inform your friend she may have to answer some very difficult questions by the authorities if she ever needs to seek medical attention for this punishment. Try time outs or withdrawing privileges on the child instead.A punishment is to stop a bad behaviour not to hurt or humiliate the individual.

Some kids like hot sauce, so soap is fine. But I support both to an extent. I mean, it's different when the kids are older teens, but for 13 and under, it's fine.

That wouldn't work on my daughter she likes hot sauce..But I think both are cruel why not fine them *everytime they say a cuss word, they have to put a quater in the jar* or it gets deducted from thier allowance, They don't get an allowence then start taking things away from them. Hurting someone pyschially doesn't solve anything and creates problems in the long run.

I have heard of that, but I have always been afraid that swallowing some of it would not be good.
I use bar soap (Irish Spring is the most vile--I know this from when I was a kid).
Cut off a small bit, have them chew and hold it in their mouth for the time of an egg timer and then make sure they wash out their mouth real well. Has not been done often--so it seems to work.

I used to think this and soap were acceptable punishments for bad language, but then I realized that there is no lesson there. I think that talking to an older child about how ugly bad language sounds in addition to a punishment, when you use bad language......this will happen. (no video games, no desert after dinner etc) teaches them accountability.
I still think the best way to teach your kids not to cuss is for the parents to use clean language all the time. ;)

I think that is wrong. My ex would punish my son with hot sauce and horshraddish sauce. When I fould out I went off. Then he made my son take cold showers. I made him leave after that

i don't recommend using hot sauce or any other kind of food that is hot , and here's why . the grandparents was kid sitting. my wife's dad made my daughter eat a hot pepper . she was around 4 yrs old ,he said she said something she shouldn't have. she ended up being allergic to the peppers and a large lump came up on her jaw she had to have it lanced and drained she is 20 yrs old now and still has a scare from it now.
