You should use a swiss/exercise ball for most things. if you need to sit it does not provide you with any support so you begin strengthening your core stability straight away. Light weights and stomach exercises such as pilates situps are also very good ways to strengthen all the muscles around your problem areas. Avoid bending and heavy lifting, and ease yourself into high impact movements such as running and impact sports. Swimming is a very good way to have an all over work out without causing stress and pain to your lower back and ribs.

An EXCELLENT core exercise is to do shoulder presses with a power rack. Do once a week, 60 seconds, and add 1 pound of weight per week. The weight should be heavy after 30 seconds.
