The state of Indiana has a wellness policy now. All children in public schools should have no less than 20 minutes of recess a day while at school.
Letting a child have recess lets them run, jump, climb and so on this get's there blood flowing through there body and more importantly their brain. Inturn this helps them stay alert.
Recess is also good for social stimulation between fellow students.

They need a mental break from the work. Most kids will start getting antsy if they had to stay in class all day.. the recess is not only good exercise but it gets there energy out so they can go back to class and concentrate.

Risty, that was a good question. In case you didn't know, some schools really don't have recess. Little do they know that recess actually helps the kids, by refreshing their brains and get them ready for the next class. It also gives them time to socialize and use their imaginations. Hope this helped.

the only reason why kids have recess is that kids from grade 1to 6 have sort patience span or something like that so that is why they take a break. then you noticed in grade 7 through out school you get no recess.

all of the reasons everyone else put. ALSO recess gives children a time to socialize and make friends, instead of being stuck in a classroom not being allowed to talk for long periods of time. recess also helps them to become more creative, because they have to use their imaginations for games to play during recess.

kids NEED recess. kids need a time to get outside and get fresh air. they need a time to be children, to run and play. children learn best through play and when they are sitting at desks all day they don't get that opportunity.
anyone who doesn't think that children need recess needs to go to an elementary school and stand on the far side of the playground facing the door. they need to watch the children as they hit the outside door...they all take off running as fast as they can yelling at the top of their lungs. for that brief second you see pure happiness.
children need the exercise, they need to run and pump their legs on the swings and go across the the monkey bars and dribble basketballs so that they can be well rounded - they need to excel in their physical development as well as their cognitive development.

they need a break. they sit in a chair all day long doing boring stuff... they're just kids! they should be able to have some fun during their day. how would you like to never watch tv, or go out with friends, or w/e you do for fun. they need to spen their time being kids while they still can!
edit:::: plus, by the time they get out of school they would be bouncing off the walls going that long of time sitting all day!
