Before your procedure, usually the night before, the doctor will have you drink a bowel prep that acts as a laxative to rid your colon of stool.

Bowel preps for colonoscopies are extremely thorough, trust me. Your doc will most likely give you a gallon jug of something called Golytely the day or so before the procedure. Believe me, this will not make you go "lightly" but rather continually and often explosively until you evacuate ALL bowel contents. If for some reason this is not effective (or you cannot tolerate drinking the stuff to have the desired effect) then you will probably end up receiving enemas (there are various kinds - phosphate, mineral oil, tap water, etc.--your doctor's choice), and repeat till clear.

Whatever your method of prep consists of, rest assured that no gastroenterologist (or whoever is doing your procedure) is going to proceed until all the junk is outta the trunk.

I'm having one tomorrow morning. I've cut back on veggies this week and just eaten protein and some starches - easier to digest. I'll have a light breakfast today then not eat until after the procedure tomorrow morning. I'll drink a lot of water today, too.

Tonight I will drink that foul tasting liquid and take some laxatives and, hopefully, poop out all the contents of my bowels. Nevertheless, I will have to have a couple of enemas tomorrow so the doctor can have a clear view of what is going on in my bowels.

It may be unpleasant, but it is important. Good luck!

The prep for a colnoscopy is so radical, believe me, a person who in impacted is no longer impacted about 1 hour after the first gulp of fleets phospha soda or mag citrate or go lytle.
If you go into a colonoscopy suite with a bowel full of poop, they will send you to the colon/rectal floor and start giving you enema's and another bowel prep.
