I have a 6 year old German Sheppard male dog. He has always been very healthy weighing in around 90 pounds. He is very acitive. But for the last six months his back hips seem to bother him the next day after he has gone for a long run or been at the park. He tries to jump up on the bed and he cant he just yelps really loud. I took him to the vet the third time it happened and the vet said it was early hip dysplasia and recamended glucosymine and chondritin pills, these dont seem to be helping much is there any thing else or could it be more serious and develope that quickly in a matter of six months when he never showed any signs before. If I take him back to take xrays dose the dog have to be put to sleep? Any info would help.

Have his hips x-rayed. The vet will most likely want to sedate him to do this. The dogs recover quickly from a light sedation. Also ask your vet about spine problems as well. He could have cauda equina. Look at an article Fred Lanting wrote about our breed and spine problems. http://siriusdog.com/articles/tvs-cauda-equina-syndrome-spondylosis.htm Try him on Zubrin for the pain. It is a newer anti-inlfammatory med that works like Celebrex does with people. Glucosamine can't hurt. Please get some x-rays done on him though to find out what is going on.

I agree with Jenny but the only reason why you see no improvment is because if he is still very active then it gives him no time to rest the pills will work eventualy talk to your vet and the dog should not be put down who knows your vet may give a bigger dose the jello also helps because it is made out of bones and will help the dog it might be helpful to get the cartlidge checked.Wishin you and your dog best of luck

I feel for you, I have a poodle with same problems, I give her the glucosymine and chondritin, Get it at wal-mart cheaper than vets. Also was told and it helped a great deal, Give your dog some mixed jello, yes the kind we eat, give it to him at least two times a day, if it's a big dog he should take about 3 oz of the stuff twice a day.you can mix it in his food. Do this till you see improvement. Also have my dog on a heating pad for the cold months. Hope this works for your dog.

Take him back!! The vet won't put him to sleep but he can prescribe meds that will control his pain. The vet will also give you advice like not letting him jump, and curtailing his exercise to a moderate amount.

You could also try taking him to a homeopathic vet. I don't know if they can help your dog but they can (and did with one of my greyhounds) do wonders with laser acupuncture. I'd try it if this was my dog.

the dog won't get put to sleep. my dog has that same problem but she got use to it, and i give her Pet Conquer, that helps her a lot. if it gets very bad then they will do surgery but they won't put her to sleep.
