Liston would knock Vitali out in 3 rounds or less. Liston was to strong and hit to hard for Klitschko. Vitali may have the height and reach advantage, but Sonny would break him down with powerful body shots and stun him with his strong jab. I dont think Klitschko had the power to keep Sonny off of him for long and he may last a couple of rounds due to his height and somewhat awkward style, but Sonny would eventually catch him and knock him out.

Toughguy this is a simple, but very good question and I'll give you a simple, clear and correct answer.

Vitali Klitschko WOULD HAVE OBLITERATED Sonny Liston and brutally knocked him out inside five rounds. Anyone who says otherwise is either completely boxing ignorant or a bias American troll. And have in mind that I am being polite and agreeing to disagree here, because if I told you what I really think about some of the previous answers I would get banned of this forum.

Liston would absolutely have no chance in this match. Klitschko is a modern heavyweight boxer, a man with very good technique, perfect conditioning, knock out power beyond belief and chin truly made of granite. He is also 8 inches taller then Liston and would outweigh him by about 40 lbs. In my opinion, there is no way that Liston could handle his power and the pressure that Vitali would put him under and he would just have been overwhelmed in this match. In fact, this would most likely look like Vitali Klitschko Kirk Johnson fight and end up in the exact same fashion.

Bias and arrogance of some people here knows no limits. They actually have the audacity to write that Liston would just play around with Klitschko and knock him out in round 1. Lennox Lewis, one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, a man who would wipe the floor with Liston without breaking a sweat, threw absolutely everything he had at Vitali and still couldn't stop him. So I really wonder just from where in the hell do some of you get the idea that the all American legend would even survive this match let alone knock Vitali out ?!!! But.. whatever, most of what I read here is not legitimate thinking but just American arrogance and disrespect at it's very best and this forum would be much better place if about 80% of the people that answered this question got banned from it.

Liston's wife, Ernestine, could have whupped Klitschko. I don't have much regard for the current heavyweight division with their half-a-dozen championship belts. Back in the ol' days guys fought for one belt, and the competition was a lot better. Vitali would be maybe a perennial 7 to 10 ranked contender, but that's it. Liston would beat him into submission within 6 rounds.

some human beings may argue that Sonny is sluggish and predictable like Samuel Peters besides the indisputable fact that the Sonny Liston that fought Muhammad Ali isn't a correct Sonny Liston. i trust a correct Sonny can do to Klitscho what Corrie Sanders did.

PROLOGUE - I AM JUST LIKE INSTANT REVIEW. I USUALLY REVISIT THINGS (IN THIS CASE MY VIEWPOINTS) FOR A RETURN TIME. THE RUSSIANS FIGHTERS ARE TECHNICALLY VERY GOOD. IF THEY WERE FROM POOR BACKGROUNDS THEY ARE HUNGRY TO BE GREAT. YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT A LOT OF GOOD/GREAT FIGHTER CAME FROM POOR BACKGROUNDS ALSO.

LISTON - W 50 (KO's 39) TF 54 - W pct 93% - KO pct 74% - wins over Patterson[2], "Big Cat" Williams and Folley - KO'ed by Ali{2} and L. Martin (average fighter) - #15 ranked puncher - #71 ranked fighter

V. KLITSCHKO - W 35 (KO's 34) TF 37 - W pct 95% - KO pct 92% - wins over Sanders, K. Johnson and O. Norris - KO'ed by L.Lewis.

When you look at a fighter, you look at his opposition. The Hwy wt division of today is not that deep in talented fighters. This bout is "The Russian Bear" vs "The Bear". I will give Vital some respect, he will provide some competition for Liston. He will test Liston's heart but before Liston can quit, he will win a 6 rd TKO.

Liston in 3 rounds or less. Your comparing a boxing legend with what amounts to a good journeyman heavyweight who has never fought anyone close to the caliber of Liston.

Toughguy I know what you're getting at posing this question brother. Liston by brutal KO in round 1. No contest. If Ali had never boxed Liston would have been champ for a LONG time.

Vitali! Too big and strong for Liston.

I don't know which fight you watched Rolando Cabrera, just Vitali was beating Lewis no prob in their fight. Lewis got lucky when Vitali was cut. Also Lewis was in his prime in his later career.
