Actually it's both.
A Muslim can be a person who just submits to Allah/God. Muslims consider Maryam Mother of Jesus, Abraham, Moses, and the rest of the Bible Crew to be Muslims even though they couldn't possibly have followed Muhammad. I think the name "Muslim" was chosen because it didn't use the Prophets name, like most religious do, and because Muslims believe that Submitting to God is the most important thing and wanted to emphasize the fact that they submitted.
Nowadays a Muslim is a follower of Muhammad. Although I have met people who fit the original definition of a Muslim, but are not followers of Muhammad.
The issue with Christians is that most of them commit what Muslims call "Shirk" which is joining partners to God. Shirk is the only unforgivable sin in Islam, so I'm not really sure what their fate is. It's weird because Christians and Jews are both seen as special people in Islam.

To be Muslim you must conform to the will of Allah (God). God wants us to do righteous deeds, better this world knowing that it will eventually pay off (if not in this life then definately the next). So (and I could be wrong) there might be Christians and Jews and some people w/o organized religion that enter heaven if they a.) believe in one God and are devout b.) they work to do good deeds c.) they believe in an afterlife. Ironically, there are Jews, Unitarian Christians and just random people that fit this criteria. The God of Islam does not discriminate against people who do righteous deeds in His name. God is most Merciful, most Compassionate and most Just (those are actually some of His names in Islam). I'm really not sure though what qualifies a person to be the most basic Muslim. I suppose some people could be Muslims and not even know it! :-) Salam to all you unsung heroes out there and may God bestow His grace and blessing upon you. Peace.

NO, you can NOT be a Christian and Muslim at the same time.
Muslim's specifically reject/deny the divine nature of Jesus. To do so, you CAN NOT be a Christian (the foundation of the faith).
Muslim's can attempt to redefine words all day long...they can make all sorts of fantasy claims...but, at the end of the day, they're still following Muhammed and his invention of islam.
There is but ONE true God, and salvation thru HIS SON, Jesus. The ONLY path to heaven (salvation of the eternal soul) is thru Jesus. No other paths. None. No, not even "for submitting to him" as a muslim.

Really a good question.
Muslim is one who submits to the will of God.
Further it states in Holy Quran "the only way of life (art of living) acceptable in eyes of God is by submitting your will to Him"
A Muslims falls in that art of living if he follows these five pillars of Islam.
They are:
Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the finality of the prophethood of Muhammad;
Establishment of the daily prayers;
Concern for and alms giving to the needy;
Self-purification through fasting; and
Pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able.

Christians have Confessed Jesus Christ their Lord. That means to trust & obey God. Could also mean to submit to God.
The problem with submitting to Islams God is that one has to deny Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. Jesus said that if we deny Him, He will deny us before the Father and the Holy Angels.
Muslim means to submit. Submitting is to trust and obey. So if you go to the deffinition of the word, Christians submit to Jesus Christ & Father God & the Holy Spirit. Because the God of Christianity is the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. So I guess you could call Christians Muslims, since Christians submit to Yahweh Elohim.
In truth though, Muslims only submit to the God (Allah) of Islam (Peace), and deny Jesus Christ diety & deny Jesus shed His Own blood for the remission of their sins.
The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.
The Christians believe God lets us into heaven because we are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and our sins are covered by Christ Righteousness.
