My 18 month old son is in daycare 2-3 days a week from 9am to 4pm, so I pay between $50-$75 per week for child care. I just want to make sure I give the right amount of a bonus. Last year I gave her $100 and EVERYONE told me that was too much? But if I lower the bonus this year will it look bad? I really like her and she is great with my son! Should I just give what I did last year? It really makes no differance to me I was just wondering what the average bonus is?

Should I buy her something this year? Like I gift basket? Spa stuff?

I think $100 is a generous bonus and I certainly wouldn't give less just because other people are tighter with their money. Your day care provider cares for your most valuable possession and deserves to be treated with kindness and generosity. Since you like her so well, I think it's more than reasonable to give generously- if you feel like giving more than last year that would be ok too, but last years amount is certainly respectable. Good for you that you have such a giving spirit to those who matter.

I have worked in preschools for 14 years, and I don't believe I've ever received money as a gift... mostly gifts made by the children, or a small gift (not over $25) from the parents. I like gift cards as gifts... since you never know exactly what smell to get from the Body Shop, or what "flavor" candle... a gift card is great! Good places for gift cards... Walmart, Target, Pier 1, Old Navy, movie rental places or movie theaters in your town, dinner places (Marie Calender's, Olive Garden, Outback, Black Angus), Bath and Body Works/ Body Shop, or any other place that they may be into. If you just have no ideas whatsoever, a generic Visa gift card would do too! I won't put you off of giving money... daycare workers are far underpaid for the incredible job they do! So, if you feel that the person who is caring for your child is doing an amazing job- money may be an appreciative gesture. Just know that your childcare provider probably isn't expecting a gift- just the recognition for the hard work they do everyday!

It's a tough call, because she will certainly remember what you gave last year and wonder why she got less this year. It is a generous bonus, but I say go for the same amount.

I've heard people say that you go for 1/2 what you pay a month for any service (gardener, housekeeper) so it's not that off base.

I just read n Real Simple that a tip or gift in the amount of $25-$70 (if one person takes care of the child $70 if more than one $25 each) or a gift in that amount. Gift certificates are most popular.

Giving your child care provider a gift would be ideal. Money is abit too much. I'm sure she would appreciate something small.
Its the thought that counts, and its a nice gesture.

We love our daycare providers and have given them large plates of homemade cookies or large bags of mixed candy in the past. The provider that we did NOT like didn't get anything and we left her room as fast as we could later in the year.

I am a daycare provider and I wouldn't expect anything honestly. I would be happy with a small gift...but nothing over 25.00
