The dog can run halfway into the woods, after which he will be running out of the woods. No matter what direction he goes.

It depends on how dense the woodes are. SO theoretically they can run until they come out the other side, or until they get tired or thirsty. The problem w/ dogs is they can be easily distracted. Esp if it is some hound dog and catches a sent. Then again, if he is already on a sent, he may tree something and stay there until it comes down.
