A friend of mine told me that some tubs and shower stalls-have built in p traps,
I think he is incorrect, does anyone know the answer to this?

It is very unusual. Most tubs and shower stalls do not have the thickness in the base to contain a built-in trap. I would play it safe and install one below the tub or stall so you dont get that stinky and dangerous sewer gas in your bathroom. Unless you want to use the smelly gas as an alibi.

i'd say all showers have trap in slab, or below deck. a toilet is the only fixture that has a built in trap!

plastic pans & mud showers - below the drain goes in on plumbing grounds!

Some probably do but it is highly unusual.
