I think one of the problems in this case is that following the Panorama tv investigation into "race fixing" a few years ago, the industry is desperate to show itself as whiter than white. By coming down so harshly on the accused jockeys they are sending out a message that says "we will not tolerate this sort of thing in our sport".
Of course everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and as you rightly say this will probably ruin their careers.
On the other hand, would anyone want to employ them with this sort of accusation hanging over their head? Just think, if I stole from my company and was awaiting trial, would any other company really want to take me on in the meantime?
99% of jockeys are in the game because they want to win, they want to be the best. The bad old days of drugging horses are over (drug testing is far too rigorous for anyone to get away with it these days), but the prospect of money can and will corrupt.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what evidence is presented at the trial next year.
I wouldn't worry too much about Darren Williams and Fergal Lynch being out of pocket for the next 9 months. Reports in today's Racing Post say that they can each expect to be paid around £1,000 per week until their trial by the British Horse Racing Board. Apparantly this is because they are covered by some kind of insurance scheme that is normally used for injured jockeys. Keiran Fallon will not get anything from BHB as his license is held in Ireland, but rest assured Coolmore will look after him!

Every so often, you get something like this. I remember around 10 years ago 7 jockeys and 5 trainers got in trouble at Penn National in PA for fixing. I don't follow that track, but I believe they were banned for life. As for Tampa Bay Downs current situation, I haven't heard the particulars on it- even WHO the jockeys are, but they're banning SEVEN of them??!! They trace things to one particular race at Great Lakes Downs LAST SUMMER? I'm guessing the outcome isn't going to be good on this one. I actually bet Tampa once in a while, and when I do it usually gives me a headache trying to figure out how some of the horses win. I think that has more to do with my handicapping the track than the jockeys however. Anyway, things happen, nobody's perfect, and I'd rather bet a crooked track than play the slot machines ANY DAY. You KNOW the slots are rigged, at least when your at the track, you get some racing for your money!
