It's sort of a power thing with cats. They like to stare at us because it makes them feel in charge. If you stare back at the cat he's likely to feel intimidated, since you are bigger and he'll turn away so he doesn't "provoke" you. Have you ever noticed that in a crowded room cats are most likely to go to the person who doesn't like cats? That's because cat lovers watch the cat and he gets intimidated. So he goes to the person who isn't watching him.

They are pondering our stupidity and what evil things they are going to do next to us. No really cats are very curious and paranoid animals. They are just watching to see if they need to run to or from us

they are trying to tell you to change the channel to the animal planet because the great cats of africa is on (they would do it but they can't hold the remote, no opposing thumbs).

I agree with everyone who says they are reading your mind. Cant you feel it? Cats are especially endowed with extra sensory perception. Your cat must be very spoiled, and love you very much, only the most pampered kittys bother to read their humans mind!

They're reading your mind...there really is no explanation for that cat phenomena - it's just one of those things that make cats so cool.
