he is very lively.also can eat a lot when he gets home from school.always thirsty.

If he's always thirsty then you need to talk to his ped. about that. Continuous thirst can be a sign of diabetes.

Obviously you've seen the doctor to know his HbA1c. Should be around 6. Anything over 8.5 is poor control in diabetics. It's possible he just eats too many starches and sweets, but more likely diabetes.
Check the doctor.

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.
