I'm planning on building a wall in my basement to close in an area. I need to fasten the 2x4 to the ground, and I've been told (via searching on the internet) to use a powder actuated drill. What other solution are there, if any? Also, same question fastening to basement wall; I'm leary of cracking the exterior wall by drilling into it.

You can do several things. The most primitive, use cut nails (concrete nails) and a hammer. This is hard and time consuming. You can use a power actuated tool. Basically, its a gun with a power load that shoots a nail through the wood into the floor. This is a good way to go. Or you can use a drill and expansion bolts. This would seem to be overkill though.

If the basement wall is concrete block and mortar, be sure to fasten the material to the wall through the mortar joints. good luck

Perpendicular or right angles or square 90 degrees. For the outer, start on the shorter wall and go right angle to the long wall. You need a chalk line and stretch it to the other long wall(or to the middle wall if you have that wall up already) and snap a line on the floor so you know where the wall on the outside is suppose to be. Totally irrelevant if the concrete walls are crooked You don't need to fasten to them. You nail a 2x4 to the floor on the line and then figure out where the ceiling plate is going to be and nail that to the floor/ceiling joists. Then you put in your stud wall.(which will now be a straight line and square). If it has more space behind it, so what...more insulation can go in there. Once you put in your wiring and plumbing (if it is needed) then board it closed with drywall. done like borscht.

a Hilti gun shoots a nail through the 2x4 and into the concrete, firmly fastening the board to the floor. it uses a gunpowder charge, and you can rent it from a tool rental place, they will also instruct you in which charges are best for what you are doing.

u can attach the treated 2x4 to the floor with construction adhesive and then use cut nails or flute nails..for the walls u can use #8 cut nails with some construction adhesive on the stud and this will hold it.....nail about every 8"..........
