Until 1978, Blacks couldn't get into the highest level of Mormon heaven. That was a good 25 years after other churches starting fighting for civil rights for Blacks. By 1978 they were the last large institution around that was still not integrated, along with the KKK and a couple of other racist churches. They still teach in that God uses skin as a way to show a curse on a people, although they say the curse is now lifted. Most of the Mormons I know bend over backwards to show how much they like Blacks since their prophet told them to 30 years ago.

Go to the source. Find a Mormon - like myself or some of the others here and ask questions. Don't rely on one source. Get all the legitimate info you can on us. Try the link below. Find a missionary, Mormon neighbor, visit the church (this Sunday will be a short service and ideal for visitors), just don't rely on the info you will and have undoubtedly found from non-members.
Now, on to your actual question. We are not a cult. There IS a lot of misinformation out there about us. There are also different sects of "Mormons". However, you are probably talking about the largest, whose formal name is The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints.
The truth in a nutshell is we believe that once the Apostles of the 1st century AD died, there was a great apostacy in that some of the plain and precious truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ were taken and/or lost from scripture. We believe this was restored in the Book of Mormon and some other scriptures we consider part of our Standard Works. We believe in the Bible. The last link is to our Articles of Faith which gives additional info on our basic beliefs.

FIRST OF ALL - If you are intelligent, which I hope you are, you will go directly to the source for the truth about the LDS religion and not listen to others who have 'heard this' or 'used to be one' or 'have read all about the mormons'...please just listen to current members, missionaries or visit the LDS.org website.
Cult is just an ugly word people have stamped on the Mormons because there are sacred ordinances and things in the temple that only worthy members can enjoy...also there are so many misconceptions and rumors and falsehoods spread about us that people automatically believe what they hear without actually finding out for themselves.
If you have any specific questions, ask me and I will try to answer.

Depends on if you are talking about The Church of Jesus Vhrist of Latter Day Saints or one of the break off groups from them that some people consider Mormons.
Go to their web site. It has the information you need. Don't listen to the people in Yahoo Answers. Most of them have no idea what they are talking about.

Research it from the source, not naysayers, as with anything. You would not get a very good answer from an athiest about Christianity, nor would you get a good picture asking someone against the church about it.
There is a lot of misinformation, especially on some of the answers listed above, like saint worship (not done at all!), you can't take off underwear, and have to touch it while bathing (lies), ask a Mormon, not someone claiming to know more than they themselves do.

Mormon is a term used to refer to adherents of the Latter Day Saint movement, and most commonly to the movement's original and largest group, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The term is derived from the Book of Mormon, a religious text that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated from ancient plates containing a history of the early inhabitants of the Americas that was compiled by a prophet called Mormon. Mormons do not consider themselves to be Protestants and do not recognize themselves as part of any larger branch of Christianity, but do consider themselves Christians.
Good place to start is to do your family history, you will soon find yourself at the archives in Utah.

Mormons are definitely a cult, rather than get all sorts of weird answers here I would do a google search, compare notes and go with what the majority are saying. Mormonism is very dangerous.

Not a cult, but a religion set up exactly how Jesus set up his Church when he walked this earth.
To get involved go to www.lds.org and look for some missionaries. It is fun, free, and a great theological time for all!
